Pregnancy "Advice"

Re: Pregnancy "Advice"

  • I'm with @ahernandez16 on the sleep issue. I can't tell you the last time I slept solid through the night! The first trimester was easier to fall asleep and stay asleep because I was so. friggin. exhausted. Also, I didn't have a belly yet or any aches or pains. I know all of the literature says, "you'll feel your best in the second trimester"... To an extent, yes I do have more energy. This energy only exists on the days I actually sleep well the night before. I developed this habit of falling asleep for a solid 4-5 hours then I am wide awake in the middle of the night for several hours. By the time I fall back to sleep, I have to be back up again for work in an hour.

    Can anybody else relate?

Anyways, the "advice" (more so comments) I hate the most is, "You think you're tired now?" That senseless comment doesn't help the here-in-now. When I have a newborn, I'll have a concrete reason for the lack of sleep. I get frustrated now because I have no great reason besides some anxiety, hormones, and poor sleep habit. Ugh. Sorry that was my rant for the week.

  • @eyelinek I was experiencing the same thing for a while, when do you take your prenatal vitamin? I had been taking mine right before bed and read somewhere that this could be the cause for my middle of the night insomnia, so I switched back to taking it with food earlier in the day & that has helped immensely. I still don't sleep through the night, but my wake-ups are much shorter lived. Hope that helps!!!

  • @eyelinek take the "you think you're tired now!" comments with a grain of salt. yes, having a newborn can leave you sleep deprived and it's really hard at first. but you settle into a routine quickly and survive on less sleep than you ever thought possible :P whereas during pregnancy you have that persistent, down-to-your-bones exhaustion AND you can't sleep (or at least I can't...I struggle a lot with pregnancy insomnia too). I'll take the tiredness of a new mom (maybe the mom of like a 4-week-old, because yeah the first few weeks are really hard) over the pregnancy tiredness any day.

I remember a lot of my advice came from BIL and his wife. I don't think they always think before they speak. And when our baby was somewhat easy and would easily lay down and such, they said you aren't real parents yet.
    Okay, thanks.

  • Yes to everything said!

The "just you wait" comments annoy me the most. As if the fact that I vomited before work and feel like I've been hit by an 18 wheeler is nothing to complain about. Ugh!

  • A really good friend of mine is a dog trainer who specializes is preparing family dogs for the arrival of a LO. I have her manual that she's created. If anyone wants me to send it to them, PM me your email address...
  • @MsBeachNJ Yes, I take my prenatal first thing in the morning. I wish it was a simple solution such as that! Glad to hear that helped you! @Emztron500 thank you! It truly is frustrating knowing insomnia is not contributed to a concrete reason. It's just because you can't sleep. Pregnancy fatigue is its own breed I swear!
  • My favorite is: "You better _______ while you can" referring to sleep, reading, going out to dinner, sex, anything. Thanks--hadn't thought of that! ;)

The best comment I've gotten so far is when a friend of ours said, "You know Brie, John has gotten substantially better looking over the past year or so. Now that you're pregnant, you'll have to step it up! Especially after you give birth! I mean he'll be like a 10 and you'll be like a 6."

The group of people we were with at lunch just stared at him, mouths open. He had no clue how insulted I was until I asked him how attractive it would be if I punched him in the face. He has foot-in-mouth syndrome pretty bad!

Can you give me his phone number so I can call him to tell him what a total douchebag he is? Does he think he's funny? I hate him!
