Has anyone had any normal or abnormal experiences with having the RH- bloodtype??
I'm 36 weeks today, and they just now caught onto it from my chart. It somehow got overlooked so I'll receive my shot for it Thursday. All I know about it is what Google has told me. Doesn't seem too alarming since this is my first pregnancy, but I'm curious if anyone has any experience they can share??

Same here. They told me at 31 weeks and told me to get the rhogam shot asap... however, after further reading and a second opinion, I decided to wait until after birth to get the shot just in case my baby is negative, too. If I were to get injured or fall, I can get the shot before, but there really is no reason to get it during your first pregnancy. Just within 72 hours of giving birth so that your next pregnancy will not be affected. If your BD is negative also, your baby will be. There is always a chance baby could be negative even with a positive father.

Im 35 weeks and have spotted and needed the shot 3x during my pregnancy. Completely depends on person.... Your provider will do and recommend whats best for you. You should have the shot in beginning of pregnancy and end of second tri. Then again right after birth. That's what was recommend to me by 3 doctors and after loosing a baby due to it on my previous pregnancy. Best of luck!

I got it with my first son at 28 weeks, after a car accident at 35 weeks and then after birth. No side effects. With this one I got it at 28 weeks.

My sweet husband doesn't know his blood type and keeps forgetting to get it checked.

I got it at 28 weeks with my first and again after she was born. I chose to opt out of the 28 weeks shot this time. If I fall or take a hit to the belly I can go to the hospital and get one right away. I will have this baby's blood tested after she's born and if she's neg, I won't get the shot but if she's + then I will get my shot then.

But no side effects with the shot ever. I just don't feel like adding the extra lab work expense if it isn't necessary. Didn't matter with our old insurance. Matters with this one. #iamcheap

I opted out of the 28 week shot. Since my husband's O- I won't need the shot after birth either since baby will also be -.

I am O-. They ran some blood tests when I was around 28 or 30 weeks to see if baby is + or -, and apparently he is also -. I don't know his full blood type, but that means I don't need the shot.

I'm RH- and on my second pregnancy. I always get the rhogam shots and after delivery my first baby and I had to have the additional shots. I've known I was RH- since I was a teenager, my family physician thought it was something I should be aware of for the future. My mom is also RH- and had the shots in the 70's while pregnant with both my sister and I. I've never had any complications from it and don't see it as a bad thing, just something that is.

First pregnancy, I got the shot. No side effects. My doctors just stressed letting them know immediately if I ever bled from day 1 since I knew my blood type. I think the shot is a blessing and glad medicine has made gains. They used to have to do blood transfusions on babies at birth and my mom's cousin had significant cognitive impairments from it. I'll take a quick shot any day!

Thank you all for sharing your experiences!! It really did help ease my mind knowing lots of people go through this, and it isn't scary at all. Being a FTM I really try not to make mountains out of molehills, but I guess it's easier said than done lol
