3rd Trimester

Baby measuring too big for my body?!

Hi all!

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before as I'm a first time mum...

I'm exactly 31 weeks and had midwife appointment today. She measured my bump and baby is measuring spot on 31 weeks. However according to my growth chart, which is based on my height and weight when I was first pregnant, baby should only be measuring 29 weeks now and therefore is actually measuring 2 weeks too big! I am a petite person and midwife had said not to worry and that because I am smaller than average the chart just reflects this and assumes I will have a smaller than average baby.

Booked in for a scan this week just to check all ok. Has anybody else had this?

Thanks :)

Re: Baby measuring too big for my body?!

  • Yes. My doc told me that as long as I am measuring plus or minus two weeks from where I am, there is nothing to worry about. At my last appointment, I was 30 weeks and measuring 32. Nothing to worry about.

  • It's always +/- 2 weeks so try not to worry. My friend was told she would have a 10 lbs baby and he was 8 just a big head throwing measurements off! Even so, few babies are actually too big to come out of their mothers body.

    I wouldn't worry.
this. if there was something to worry about, your midwife would have mentioned it.
  • +/- 2 cm is completely normal. Could be you had a big lunch that day! More than 2 cm different is when they start to get concerned. If your MW is now concerned, I would 't be either.

  • I wouldn't worry. I went to my midwives at 32 weeks and was measuring 30 weeks and she told me it was nothing to worry about. But then I had a 4d scan and they told me that my baby was absolutely perfect in size and would with around 8lb when he is born. They also said this to my sister in law about her baby weighing 7lb 12oz and she was born weighing 8lb 4oz so I honestly wouldn't worry

  • I'm very petite and had all my 3 babies vaginally without any issues. My babies were not crazy big but bigger than average. It has to do with your pelvis not height/weight pre-pregnancy. Some women have trouble pushing out a 6lb baby. I honestly wouldn't worry. Estimates can also be wrong.

Exactly-- also, fundal measurements can really vary. I had a lot of amniotic fluid & measured ahead with my son. He was an average size (7lbs 11oz) born at 41 weeks. Your size now may plateau. Don't borrow trouble.

  • I also have this - my bump is measuring spot on now (had a blip at 36 weeks when it meadured 31 - different midwife did it) at 39 weeks. But this means my baby is in the 90th centile for my measurements and therefore is quite big. But his head is engaged which is a good sign he will fit through the pelvis. At 31 weeks your baby might not have engaged yet (at 30+4 my baby was still free) but was 3/5 by 33 weeks. 3/5 is *just* considered to be engaged. Have a look in your notes and see what your midwife has written, it's not uncommon to engage at 31 :) once they're engaged it's unlikely they won't fit through due to size alone
  • Growth chart could be different because I'm from England... Not really sure but that's how it was explained to me. Reason for growth scan is that it's procedure here is that if baby is measuring too big or too small (according to the chart) you have a scan to check all is ok.

Not really that worried at all, I just thought I'd ask on here if anyone else had had this before that's all...

    Thanks for advice anyway X

  • @nicolapniok well I hope the responses you got were reassuring that all is well.
