3rd Trimester

Early contractions which have been stopped.

Hi everyone,
Basically, I am just curious as to whether anyone else has experience contractions and had them stopped and if so how did you go for the rest of your pregnancy or how are you going? Is there more of a chance that I will deliver early or not? I am now 30 weeks pregnant.
Here is my story.
At 28 weeks I woke up at 4 in the morning to contractions happening about every 5 minutes. This went on all morning and I was lucky enough to have my midwife appointment that day. When I went and saw my midwife she could feel the contractions happening when she put her hand on my stomach so sent me up to the hospital. At the hospital they put me on the CTG machine to measure my contractions and I also had to have a speculum done. One of the worst things ever mind you.. The speculum results showed that my cervix was still closed although the swab that they did showed that I had a 1% chance of delivering in the next 7 days. They kept me in overnight and gave me tablets every 30 minutes for the first hour and a half and then every 4 hours after that to relax my muscles to stop the contractions. I also had to have two steroid shots, one after I had my tests done and another 24 hours later just to mature my babys lungs a little faster. My contractions had stopped so they sent me home. Since this trip I have only had the occasional Braxton Hicks contraction.

Re: Early contractions which have been stopped.

  • I had to have early contractions stopped with my 2nd and I ended up going full term. You said they told you you only have a 1% chance of delivering soon so I'd say to go with that. Rest when possible and stay as hydrated as possible.

  • I am guessing the swab you had done was a fetal fibronectin. A negative result means there is a 99.2% chance that you will not deliver within the next 7-10 days-- and some docs even say 14 days. If the contractions stopped, seems like you're going to be okay. If they persist, you might ask about being put on meds at home. I have been fighting to either prevent or stop preterm labor since 22 weeks with contractions picking up around 30 weeks and I have been on procardia at home since being released from a hospital stay. I am now almost 34 weeks and not having any issues. Good luck!
  • @peppercorn16 thank you for that, they didn't explain it thoroughly to me! Wow you have had a bit of a crazy time then, I am glad you are not having any issues now.
Good luck to you also :)
  • Yup I went in at 24 weeks for uti and bad ctx. Had the ffn swab and it was negative thank goodnesd. Since then I have had some rounds of ctx but they always stop.

  • I ended up in the hospital twice for contractions. Once at 23 weeks and again at 25 weeks. My contractions were happening every 5-8 minutes, so they gave me the steroid shots as well. I was put on procardia for about 2 weeks. It helped. Now that I'm off of it, I have been getting frequent contractions again. But my doctor said as long as it's not causing cervical changes, its ok. I have a short cervix to begin with, but so far the contractions haven't affected it and I'm 29 weeks now. If you are still having contractions you should make sure your doctor monitors your cervix.
