How long does LO nurse for?

My LO is 6 weeks old now and she is taking 45 minutes to an hour to nurse. It is a little better than she was a month ago, but not much. My pediatrician and everything I have read says that they eventually will eat much more efficiently and quicker. How old are your LO's and how long do they take to nurse? And how long did it take them to become quicker at nursing?

Re: How long does LO nurse for?

  • Mine is 6 weeks and she usually nurses for about 15 minutes and she is full. She used to take forever because she would constantly fall asleep at the breast, but now she stays awake the whole time. Is yours awake for the whole feeding?
  • LO is 5 weeks today and he takes about 10-15 minutes per breast. If he doesn't take both sides he'll want the second side after a half hour

  • About 30 minutes. I really don't like it to take longer than that!
  • Depends on the time of the day and what I allow her to do! She's almost 6 weeks and I feel like she gets a decent amount when she does between 10-15 min per side. However, sometimes she will milk it a bit longer and end up there on one side for 25-30 min! Usually half of that time though is spent with her half asleep and sucking for soothing. I try not to let this happen too often but sometimes I don't mind- especially when I'm trying to get her to go back to bed in the middle of the night. She doesn't do well with sleep unless she's already half asleep or fully asleep when I put her in the bassinet- so I can't take any chances and have her be awake!
  • At night she'll be sleepy the whole time, but during the day she'll be alert for maybe 10 or 15 minutes and then she sleep eats. Every time I try to take her off when she's sleepy she realizes what's happening and starts eating more actively. Is it okay to take her off once she's asleep? I haven't been because I want to make sure she eats enough! She will unlatch herself but it takes about 30 minutes or more, and she always eats from both sides.
  • Mine is almost 6 weeks old, he nurses for 30 min on each breast. He latches and unlatches multiple times without yet enptying the breast. So it takes around an hour. Because of this i pump during the day and bf at night. I wonder when will this become better :/
  • Mine is 8 weeks old and he nurses for about 7min each side at night and 10-15 each side during the day because he's more alert.
  • Baby is 6weeks old and nurses for about 20mins each side. Sometimes up to 30mins per breast if she falls asleep.

  • I have an oversupply do I usually nurse one side during a feeding. During the day and his late night feeds he's very efficient and nurses for 5 -10 minutes. In the evening it can last up to an hour :)
  • My LO is 6 weeks old tomorrow, he nurses 15-20 mins just on one side a feeding and I alternate sides. He usually self detaches unless he goes over 25 mins and it starts to hurt because he's sucking not suckling. I know he's getting enough to eat because he's getting big and has lots of dirty and wet diapers! If I pump I can pump out 5 oz from one side. I've almost been worried that I'm oversupplied. Not sure if that's really a problem or not...

  • 15-30 Minutes per boob. And it honestly depends on how hungry she is.
