Homemade Babyfood

Any ideas on how to make my own babyfood? Do I buy fresh vegetables and peel and purée them? If so do I add water or anything else to it? Or do I just use canned vegetables with low sodium? I'm wondering because my Lo is almost seven months old and she still hates her baby food in a jar.

Re: Homemade Babyfood

  • Fresh is better than canned. You cook it and throw it in the blender. I like using broth or water that I boiled in to keep the flavor. Some things I really like doing are to make a turkey soup and then blend some for the baby. Very flavourful. Don't be afraid a scoop of a casserole blended up for the baby. I find that my little girl prefers a mixed blend of foods rather than a single and the more floor the faster she opens her mouth.
  • Use fresh if you can, or frozen, but not from the can. Boil and then either use a blender or food processor to puree. If needed, add water that you used to boil, or breast milk. I then put it in ice cube trays and freeze so its easy to pull out one or two (or more) cubes to heat up for the meal. Its pretty easy and much better than buying jarred baby food (all those preservatives can't be good). There are a lot of free online sites with recipes.

  • I've been buying fresh veggies and fruits. Have both steamed and baked then, then puréed with the food processor while mixing in breast milk or formula to get my desired consistency. I clean the food first, then peel, then move on to steaming the food. For sweet potatoes i baked them in the oven, then scooped out the insides and puréed them. I also purchased both silicone ice cubes trays and small plastic containers for the portions on amazon. I work full time and have a 2 hr commute everyday, so I make a big batch on the weekend and freeze it. It honestly doesn't take a long time, less time making baby's food than dinner for us! So far so good!
  • I use organic fresh and frozen veggies and fruits. Also, organic baby rice/oatmeal/quinoa cereals. For fruits and veggies, I buy 1 of each kind since idk if she will like them. If she does, then I will make more. Clean, peel, chop, boil, and puree/blend. I make batches and freeze them in ice cube trays. Banana and avocado, I just mash with a fork. I dont add meat nor dairy. Some stuff ive made are apples, pears, butternut squash, green peas, parnips, carrots, sweet potatoes, red beets, kiwi, etc. No salts nor spices. Just add water or breastmilk to get the consistency that you like or baby likes. Definitely no canned/ processed foods. Go organic!
  • Fresh organic produce, steamed or baked preserves the nutrients best. Then puréed in the food processor and frozen into cubes. Sometimes I add water if I need to thin it out but not always.
