Metformin plus Insulin?

Hello everyone! I am 30 weeks pregnant, and I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (about 10 years ago).  However, before I got pregnant, I got my sugars under control, was taken off all medication, and my most recent A1c (in July) was 4.9.

With the pregnancy, I recently started taking metformin (about 4 weeks ago).  They have slowly increased my doses because my morning fasting sugars are running anywhere from 89-108, usually between 95-100.  So I am taking 2 500-mg pills with dinner, and 2 500-mg pills with my nighttime snack.  Since my sugars have not gone down in the morning, the doctor wants me to continue taking the 4 pills of metformin a night, PLUS add 10 units of Levemir (insulin).

Does anyone know if this is normal/safe? Just feel like they are pumping me full of meds.

Re: Metformin plus Insulin?

  • It is safe. I take Metformin and insulin but I'm a type 1 diabetic. The Metformin will help your body the most by helping it to be sensitive to the insulin your body naturally makes and then the insulin will just supplement what your body isn't producing.
It's really not a lot. It's just extra insurance to keep your blood sugars where they need to be.

  • Thanks for the info! They make me all paranoid because my sugars are slightly elevated, but they are treating me like they are completely out of control. :)

  • Your A1c is awesome and you are not out of control at all! The reason they do that is because non-diabetics run lower during pregnancy than they do when not pregnant. Don't let them scare you, you are doing super awesome!
  • You really should talk to your own medical professionals about this. We're not the right people to ask. Im a nurse but I don't feel comfortable saying what is right for you since I don't know your levels, your history, or anything about you, really.
