Trying to Get Pregnant

Exercise while TTC

Has anyone been given any medical advice on this? I have suffered a miscarriage at 10 weeks and now 2 chemical pregnancies. The miscarriage was a partial molar but I can't figure out why i keep having these chemical pregnancies. in my case i am 3 for 3 with trying to get pregnant but 0 for 3 in getting it to stick. I'm not a runner but power walk anywhere from 6-12 miles a week. I have heard stories of other ppl having to stop their exercise routine but I have never been told this by a doctor. When i was pregnant with the baby that ended in a miscarriage at 10 weeks the doctor was actually encouraging me to not quit exercising but I'm wondering it that advice should change now that i have lost 3.

Re: Exercise while TTC

  • I would listen to the advice of your doctor. If you don't trust the advice you've been given, get a second opinion. Have you seen an RE? If you have had recurrent MCs, it might be time to see one.

  • I don't think exercise would have anything to do with your mc.  The general rule is you can keep exercising in the same way you were before you started TTC.  Just don't add anything new and crazy on top of it.  So sorry for your loss.

It wouldn't hurt to follow up with him if you're concerned. Sorry for your losses. I hope you have success soon.

  • Firstly, I want to say I am sorry for your losses.

Exercise shouldn't impact your ability to TTC or have a sticky pregnancy, unless you suddenly took on a much more rigorous routine after getting pregnant.  It's generally suggested to keep the same level of activity once pregnant. so even a runner could keep running (a non runner should not decide pregnancy is the time to take up jogging).

I hope you find success soon!
  • I think most doctors are super encouraging of continuing your exercise routine during pregnancy, as long as it's comfortable. The only time I've ever heard of people stopping, is if their body fat percentage is too low. But in those cases it's because they aren't able to get pregnant at all.

The only time Drs tell them to cut back on exercises it is the extreme athletes who work all day and that is because they have to low of body fat, so it is low body fat that cause infertility issues not work out. Most likely that is not your problem. Have they check your thyroid, thyroid issues are one reasons for mc. My doctor checked my and also because I have fmaily history for it.

  • So I agree with the advice to talk to a dr. When I was pregnant I was told to continue exercising as normal. It's not a great time to start a new intense routine, but continue with what's normal and comfortable for you. I k ow many women who have continued a vigorous exercise routine through their whole pregnancy.

    THAT BEING SAID

One of my best friends suffered three mc's and then had to be on progesterone for her fourth pregnancy. She was considered a high risk pregnancy because of her history and was told to take a break from her exercise routine while pregnant.
  • So sorry for your losses.  I normally workout 10 hours a week, and my doctor told me that it would be fine!   I might just need to cut back a little bit because I'll feel a bit more tired than normal.  Like others said just don't add more stuff to your plate with exercise.  I was advised to gain weight, however. I don't intend on cutting back on exercise any time soon.

First: I'm so sorry for your losses. Second: I would absolutely listen to your doc on this. If anything, it will benefit you more to exercise while TTC (and while pregnant!!). Personally, I have been lifting weights for two years now and will continue to do so even after I'm pregnant. Of course, every woman is different-but if your doc has given you the OK on this, then I would take their advice. GL and FX for you!
  • I have continued my exercise routine with this time around ttc as well as with my first. Unless you are doing something extreme you should not have to discontinue your exercise routine.

I am sorry for your loss. <3

This isn't necessarily true. Excessive exercise has been linked to both anovulatory cycles and short luteal phases, even for normal body weight women. They aren't causal studies, but the statistical link is there. One theory is that women who work out a lot have suppressed LH or FSH, both of which could mean the corpus luteum doesn't fully develop and thus doesn't secrete enough progesterone during the luteal phase (see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1902847 and https://press.endocrine.org/doi/abs/10.1210/jcem.83.12.5334). But that's for excessive exercise--I can't imagine that power walking 6-12 miles a week would qualify. Both of the studies I cited studied runners. Even if you did more than that, I wouldn't necessarily cut back until you hear from a doctor.

Have you had a progesterone check at 7DPO, OP?
