Buy now, or wait for Black Friday?

Hey ladies, I'm a first time mom and never was into babies very much. I think I went into a baby store only twice in my life time, so I have no idea what a good price/steal is for baby clothes. My baby girl still needs a couple things, like thick & soft sleepwear (late December baby), socks, beanies, etc. I'm wondering if I should buy what I need now, or wait for Black Friday Sales. Carter's currently has 50% off everything, plus and additional 25% if you spend more than $40, which I plan to. But even with 50% off at Carter's, is that a "steal" on baby clothes?

Please help me out :) I'd be very thankful

Re: Buy now, or wait for Black Friday?

  • I love shopping at Carters and it seems they do sales like that often. I'm not super frugal so to me that is a good deal especially with the extra 25% off for spending $40. I always check their clearance as well, sometimes they have an additional % off clearance. Unfortunately I'm only able to shop here about twice a year since there is not a carters near me.
  • Since you likely have plenty of time, I would wait to see what they offer at Black Friday. If you're not impressed with the sales, then get what you need when their next big sale rolls around.

  • Carters does seem to run sales fairly often, but that doesn't mean that it's not a good deal! I personally recommend buying the majority of things in 0-3 months sizes though - as a FTM I had no idea that newborn sizes were basically made for babies that weigh 5-8lbs until like two weeks ago!
  • You can't pay me to shop on Black Friday!  I can't deal with the crazies.
I also agree to maybe wait a bit.  You can always snag coupons and hit the sales around New Year! :)

So much this. Black Friday is awful.
  • If you are a Prime member keep an eye on Amazon's lightening deals. They always have pretty good deals on baby clothes.
  • Wait until cyber Monday and save your sanity ;) carters always has sales, as does gap. Gap is going to be more expensive that carters but I think the quality and the look is a little nicer for certain things. Also, are you having a shower? I got so many clothes that we didn't ask for and ended up returning about $150 worth of stuff.
  • If you have a local resale group, you could probably score big there. I know I sold my daughter's entire winter wardrobe for $30-$40.
  • I did have a baby shower :) and we got some clothes, but mainly those little shirts with leg wholes and buttons (one piece I think that's what they're called). Since our baby will be born during the coldest of seasons, we need more of the thick, soft onsies with the footies (don't know what those are called, either). Ive seen lots of cute ones at Carter's and I love Gap! But I do agree, it's a little pricey. I think we will wait for Cyber Monday though :)

I've been told babies grow quickly, so should I get size 0-3 months instead of newborn?
  • @itstheblackwidowbaby you had already answered my size question ^_^ thanks!
  • The only thing I'd say go for and buy now are things that you truly think may not be there, even come Black Friday.  When it comes to beanies and I don't know if you're looking to get her 1-2 warm winter type hats, sizes may be hard to come by.  I know that Carters is already starting to put out spring and short sleeved stuff, so even some of the fleece sleepers and what you consider to be heavier material may be picked over/out of your size.  If you find that you'd be spending over the $40, maybe narrow down your shopping cart to as close to $40 as you can get it, so you get the 25% off and wait for the other stuff for Black Friday or Cyber Monday as some PP have mentioned.
  • lizzbeth292 Don't skip newborn sizes altogether. My daughter weighed 8 lb 11 oz at birth and some newborn clothes were too big for her.

  • I would buy from Carter's now or there may not be much winter stuff left. The 50% off + the 25% is usually the best sale that they run.
I had a December baby and I waited too long to buy things and spring stuff was coming out when she was born.

This! I ended up buying any sort of winter stuff already, because I didn't want to run into sizes being out and spring stuff already coming in. I even went a little overboard with 4-5 different winter type hats, because I don't know how big his head is going to be and I don't want to be stuck with nothing that fits or something that's too thin in the middle of our Upstate NY winters at the end of Jan. when I deliver.
  • The ladies are correct - buy now or there won't be anything left! I'm having an early Feb baby and I wanted the sleep gowns with the built-in mittens and elastic bottoms. Ditto for the soft Minky sleep sacs. I didn't find much in the regular stores. Our Carters mostly has cutesy clothes that are hard to deal with (I'd really only consider them for photos and parties). I found them at the discount stores already! TJ Maxx, Burlington were the 2 stores that had a ton - all heavily discounted. BTW I'm having a boy and the girl clothes outnumber the boys clothes by 10 to 1. One store had only 2 racks of boys clothes, the rest was a very cute pink explosion.
  • Yea, I'm just starting to realize that they're isn't many NB or 0-3M sizes for winter clothes. Will definitely have to shop this weekend to find cute ones and in the right size! Thanks ladies :)

yeah maybe I'm being paranoid but coming from another country, I'd be worried about being pregnant and risking injury on Black Friday... I'm sure it's not as bad as the worst you see online.. But I'm sure it's still hectic.
  • When my first was 2 months old I ventured out on blk fri... never again! The only place I shop on blk fri now is at home. Besides bru has some great sales going on now for clothes.
  • I already bought a good collection of fleecy winter sleep and plays just so I would have them. Buy at least a few and keep tags and reciepts just in case.
  • Baby Fest is going on at Baby's R Us RIGHT NOW :). Lots of good deals :)!!
  • CYBER MONDAY!!! I can't stand the crowds.

Agreed, my DH had to go out and buy my LO newborn sleepers, because he was swimming in the 0-3month.

We bought mostly 3 months and 6 month clothes from carters since they are cozy and cuddlymy with their sales and 20% off coupons, we got several sleepers for about $5
  • I agree that is an awesome sale. We don't get the same deal on the Canadian carters website. I agree with PP that it probably won't get better than that, and you may be risking missing out on some of the clothes you want. I've had a few things in my cart go out of stock just this week.

  • DS only ended up weighing 6 lbs. 5 oz. and wore nb for 10 weeks! He is still really petite and has never followed sizes accurately so I would personally say to avoid stocking up and too many bigger clothes until you see how they are going to grow unless it is a killer deal. DS is now 15 months old and just barely in 12 months clothes. Most of the bigger clothes we bought he hasn't been able to fit into and hasn't matched the seasons so they are still sitting in hangers.
