Germ aphobe...too much?

My friend's DH is a germaphobe.  She said the other day he called to ask her to bring home toothpaste and she told him they have almost a new tube.  He said she forgot and left the cap off so it is contaminated.  No kidding.  Well, she forgot to get toothpaste on the way home and when she went to use it that night she couldn't find it.  She asked him what he did with it he said he threw it away.  Do you think this is a bit much?  She said it is driving her crazy...especially since they have a baby on the way and she can only imagine what life will be like once he/she is born.

  • Um, yes.  That is extreme.  Sounds a bit OCD actually.

  • He needs medication or counseling or something. I would kick his ass for that kind of waste.

  • ditto jodi...that very extreme.  Britt is like that only she has to have her own tube of toothpaste that no one uses.

  • Maybe I'll suggest that to her...he have his own things.  She's mentioned he washes his hands quite often but never really anything else...until this story.
  • My aunt married a guy like that.  They had 2 kids and they have both been in therapy for years because they were raised with such extreme behaviors like that.

I would certainly suggest he get some help before kids.  Yikes!

  • Excessive hand washing is definitely a sign of OCD.  My dad used to wash his hands so often that they were always cracking and bleeding.  He got stuck in a "pattern" and would wash his hands in the kitchen, then the downstairs bathroom, then the upstairs bathroom and REPEAT.  It would usually last for a cycle of 3.
  • I'll have to ask if he washes his hands after everything he does.  They have a dog (Jack Russell) and I know he plays with him a lot.  I wonder if he washes his hands every time he touches the dog.  It does sound like OCD.  I'm not sure if she can get him in therapy since he has no insurance.   She and baby to be have insurance but that is it.
