constipation

my boy has been really cranky lately (in a gassy way; always pushing, grunting, crying, etc) but i didnt suspect constipation because his poops were still soft and more on the liquid side. he didnt have a poop yesterday and now today he pooped but its not as soft, its in a ball and was stuck to his bum when i took his diaper off and when i scraped it off with the diaper, it came off as a whole like in a ball. not rock hard but definitely not his usual poop. hes 3 weeks today. is this normal? any advice on this?
