Iron

At the 2 month appointment our doc suggested that we start doing vitamin with iron supplements. She said that soon breastmilk will not produce iron so the baby will need it elsewhere. I've tried giving it to her three times now, but of course it tastes gross. The first time I did it slow but she spit only some out, second was pretty much all spit out, and third I tried in a pumped bottle(which tasted weird to her but she ate it).

I really don't want to pump every morning just to give her the vitamins. Mostly because I'd rather get my sleep to take care of her the rest of the day. Now the thing is, I've doing some research and it says at 6 months is when a baby really needs supplements. Should I wait until she is eating food to add it in or continue trying to give it to her like I've been doing?

Re: Iron

  • We gave it to our LO a few times and put it into his bottle. My friend with 3 kids suggested that. He didn't like the taste either! When I asked my friend about it, she says she doesn't worry too much about it for her 3rd baby because they never even mentioned it to her for their first one and he is now 5! I've stopped giving it to him because we do supplement with formula some, so I kind of figure he's getting it there.
  • We've been doing it since birth into a pumped bottle daily. Lo is used to it. Will make a face but takes it anyways.

  • @theoneandonlysmp How often do you pump? I barely have time to pump once and would rather freeze it instead of using it daily.
  • Right before I leave for work in the morning. So she has fresh milk and Dh gives it to her when she wakes up. We miss some days here and there and she is fine taking it the next time we try. Even if it's only half the dropper so lo tastes it less I say it's better than nothing.
  • We are doing vitamin D drops & probiotics, but my pediatrician did not mention iron supplements at the 2 month appt

Same mine didn't either. Maybe it's too soon to start supplementing :-/
