Layering baby for sleep

For those in cooler states (I'm in MI), how many layers are you dressing your little one in for sleep now that the nights are cool (outside temp has been in the 40s at night)? We've been doing an undershirt, cotton footie pjs, cotton velcro swaddle, and two muslin swaddle blankets. He is never sweaty or hot to the touch when he wakes up, in fact he seems very comfortable and sleeps 7-8 hours this way, but I've had some friends freaking me out by saying it's too much...thoughts?

Re: Layering baby for sleep

  • It got into re high 40's last night for the first time this year - I'm in KS. I just put her in fleecy pj's and she slept thru the night.

But I would say as long as your LO is comfortable, you're doing the right thing.

Do you have the heat inside!? As long as he's comfortable then everything is good! I put my little one in a footed onesie pj and use 2 blankets but it's the warm heavy cotton ones. He has a favorite blankie so I use that one and an extra one!

  • Is it possible for my baby to "run hot" just as adults might? She seems to sweat so easily so I've just been putting her in light cotton, footed pajamas and a muslin blanket.
  • Yes the heat is on. Haha, I can see how that wasn't super clear in my post :-P
It's just that it never feels that warm inside once it gets so cold outside...
    Thanks for the response!!
  • My baby is always hot so we just put him in a normal footed sleeper and a swaddle and he sleeps 10-12 hours. We live in Ontario Canada
  • I'm in ND I put him in footed pjs a cotton halo swaddle and then tuck a double layer flannel blanket around him. He does just fine with that for now. His room stays about 65 to 67 at night right now. I have a fleece halo swaddle for when it gets colder at nights.

    transition to fall right!
he sleeps in a footie onesie and a cotton swaddle,
he sleeps at least 10 hours
he's a little bit sweaty in the morning but he has
a high body temperture like my husband
  • I'm in the northeast and the house is 67-68 at night. He sleeps in a footed PJ (usually fleece) and a blanket up to his chest.

  • We keep the heat at 68 at night..although it feels colder. I keep my LO in fleece footed pj's with two muslin blankets swaddled around her waist/legs (she likes her arms free). Her body and cheeks feel warm but her little hands are cold :(. I'm the same way though so I guess she is fine. She still is sleeping around 10 hours a night.
  • Onesie (long sleeved if it's gonna be low 40s) swaddle with hospital blanket, swaddleme over that, hat sometimes

My LO always has cold hands and feet But he is still a sweaty little booger!! I say dress them for comfort. What works for one baby might not work for another.
  • I'm struggling with this. Also in Ontario and it's been cool at night. We usually put him in cotton footie pjs and a cotton swaddle. The trouble is at his bedtime the house is still pretty warm and he gets all sweaty, but by the middle of the night it's cooler. I feel like I'm constantly experimenting with new pj/blanket combos. I'm almost looking forward to when we put the heat on and the temperature is more predictable.

Absolutely, my older two children both run hot while I run cold. I have to consciously make sure to dress them in at least one layer less than I am wearing.

My LO seems to run colder like me, at night we do have the heat on although it's only getting into the high 40s overnight. She sleeps in either a fleece pajama or a terry cloth pajama with a cotton sleep sack over her.
