Labor inspiration board

has anyone used or is anyone going to use and inspiration board for labor? I was thinking about printing out positive saying and quotes that I can read or have someone read to me when I am having a particularly hard time. Is it point less or could it help?

My midwife mentioned bringing some stuff to the room, like a picture to stick on the wall to focus on, aromatherapy, electric candles, etc. I'm gonna bring a speaker to play music I like and some lavender oil to chill out. God only knows if I'm gonna dig it in the moment but bring what you think will help!
  • The L&D nurses at my childbirth class suggested bringing something that will be the baby's (like an outfit or toy) to focus on. I thought it was really cute and I will be doing that so I can focus on the "prize"!

I think I had a fairly easy labor, but even so, all I could do when I was in active labor was close my eyes, breathe through it and rest. There wasn't a whole lot of room for distractions for me of any kind.  That being said, I'll share the best thing said to me during labor, maybe you could use it on your board.  When I was getting towards the end and feeling very tired, a nurse said to me: "Your contractions are about 90 seconds now, you can do ANYTHING for 90 seconds."  It was (is) so true, taking the contractions one at a time and realizing that yes, I can get through anything, it's only 90 seconds, felt so empowering and got me through to the end.

Wait wait wait. Contractions can be 90 seconds long?!!?!

I strongly recommend reading the HypnoBirthing book by Marie Mongan. I will be practicing hypnoirthing and I a really looking forward to my labour and delivery. Here are some hypnobirthing affirmations:

  • Thank you ladies for all of your great advice!

I feel like I'm just going to want to shut everything out around me and zone out. I'm probably gonna come up with a "safeword" for DH during labor. Like, "pineapple" will mean "please shut the eff up" in the nicest way possible. I tend to need space when I'm uncomfortable.
Ha, this sounds like me. I don't like when my SO touches me/talks to me when I'm not feeling good, so I can't imagine how it will be when I'm in labor! I'll probably just want him to shut up & just be there. :))

  • That sounds so sweet! I love that idea. Everyone has different ways to help them relax and that seems like such a good way to focus on what you're doing and not the crazy surrounding you!
  • I have printed birth affirmations and put them on my fridge but i hadn't thought of putting it on a board and taking to hospital while im in labor, not a bad idea!
For any ladies that are interested some of the affirmations are:
    - I will have a stong and healthy baby
    - I trust my body to know how to birth this child
    - I am a stong and capable woman
    - I trust my instincts to do what is best for my baby
    - Good strong contractions help my baby come into the world
    - I trust in my ability to give birth
    - I relax my mind and muscles.
    - My body will birth in its own time
    - I love my baby and i am doing all that is necessary to bring about a healthy birth

Im a FTM so not sure if this all goes out the window when i am in labor but i love saying them each morning and hopefully it will help.

    Also, another beautiful quote:

The power and intensity of your contractions cannot be stronger than you, because it is you.

    ~ Unknown

The "I am a strong and capable woman" one reminds me of the episode of friends when Chandler quits smoking by listening to those tapes at night while sleeping and it turns out they were for women, so he gets really effeminate. Anyway, gave me a good laugh :) Honestly, I think these and the quotes @tacosarah posted from hypnobirthing are great! As a FTM, I don't really know what's going to work best for me during labor so I've been trying out a lot of different relaxation techniques so that I have a lot of "tools" to choose from on d-day, including affirmations, visual imagery, different laboring positions, essential oils, pressure points, etc. Hope it works!!
  • nano1 LOL, this sounds about right....I was freaking out at mine for trying to touch me during contractions. HANDS OFF, I really just wanted to rock back and forth and focus.

I LOVE this idea. Definitely stealing it.

My doula also suggested this when you are feeling like you can't do it anymore! She said sometimes when it gets really hard women forget about the prize ;)
