What movements do you feel and where is your baby's head/bum?

It drives me nuts that my OB won't check until 36 weeks. Most of the time if they are breech there's not too much hope at that point! Im 33+4 and going for an elective scan at a boutique on Saturday to either give me peace of mind or help me prepare for other possible outcomes.
FTM here and ivf mom by the way.

  • I would rather know when there is an opportunity to try the advice on the spinning babies website than when.the baby is big enough that turning, while possible, is unlikely. My elective scan is at 34 weeks. I'm praying she is head down then. Anyone with comments on the movement they feel vs where baby's head is?
  • My baby is head down and very low. I feel most of his movements down around my hips, but I am also 36w3d and he is measuring pretty big. I'm not sure I am the norm for this, but hope it helps! I thought he was breech for a while but he's keeping that head down.
  • My little guy is breech and I know there is a head on one hip and a butt on the other. I feel kicks up high and hiccups by my hips. I'm 36 weeks today. If your little one is breech, try the spinning babies website. It hasn't worked for me, but I have one stubborn child.
  • At 31 weeks doc said she was head down. I just feel so much low movementn and shuffles and sharp cervical pains and only rolls up top and a hard mass that pops out occasionally....all a guessing game! My little one is measuring over a week ahead so she's measuring about 35 weeks.

to the OP: first, there is still time as PP have said so don't worry. second, i am a ftm and had major fear/anxiety that my guy was breech at 34 weeks... but what i thought was his head was actually his butt (under my ribs right side)!  (that was the hard mass that you mentioned.) here is a clue, if your LO ever has the hiccups and you feel them lower down near your hips and pelvis he might be vertex. i still feel punches and stuff lower down but i can usually find his butt now that i know where it is :) i had convinced myself it was the head and also started going on the spinning babies website but there ended up being no need. don't freak yourself out (easier said than done, i know). as a FTM also i imagine the worst case scenario for everything!!!

  • Here's a couple guides on how to tell position.  Just remember, these are best guesses, but does not mean positively that's how your baby is positioned or even that they'll stay in that position.

  • My babies are both head down, right on my cervix--lucky me. I feel their feet kick up by my boobs. When they have hiccups, it is very low in my pelvis. One was head down at 24 weeks & they were both head down by 28.

  • My baby has been head down and super low in my pelvis since 30 weeks. I'm 35 weeks tomorrow, I only know this because my Dr checked. My baby is also estimated to be over 9 lbs like my first !
  • When your doctor checks the baby's heartbeat is it usually in the same place? My girls always in the bottom left so I can usually tell that her head is either in the pocket of my left hip or in my pelvis. I also feel her legs always on my right side. If you feel hiccups that is usually a good indication of position. I usually feel them in my pelvis or a little bit higher on my left side.
  • I am a FTM and had similar fears but yesterday I had a scan and I was completely wrong on how she was laying. Her feet are under my ribs in my right side (I was sure of that), her but is high and center (I was sure it was her head), her spine wraps down my left side and her head is by my hip on my right side. When the tech traced her with the Doppler she made a giant C on my belly. Her hands and feet have been in front of her face for every scan and yesterday she was graving her toes!! (Super cute!!)

I would trust your doctor, there is plenty of time to flip. My best friend's baby flip the day before of her scheduled c-section at 39 weeks. Also some babies are in a position for a reason (uterus shape, short or wrapped cord), keep that in mind before trying to do anything on your own:/
  • Next time the OB listens to the heartbeat, ask if he or she can tell where the head is. Mine was able to say pretty confidently that baby is head down just based on that.
  • Was told my baby is already lowered and in head down postion I can feel him wiggle his little head really low and his little legs and butt a bit higher then my belly button:)
  • I feel hiccups very low, near the right pelvic area, i feel kicks on my ribs (which feels very different from his little hand pushing) and his bum/back is very distinguishable when he moves and its a huge bulge/bump that sticks out of my actual bump! Haha but im hoping this is what the ob says when she eventually checks. These are just my guesses!
  • At 32 weeks baby was head down, low, and ready to go. However, he's tall and his feet are in my ribs! I feel hiccups in my butt, kicks in my ribs, and a little tush right around my belly button. It's perfectly round and moves around sometimes. When he kicks me in the ribs, I spank that little butt!

I just told my dr today that I feel hiccups in my butt!
  • we've been head down since I think 30 weeks and the entire pregnancy he kind of vegged out on the right side of my abs sticking one leg under my right ribs and the other out my left side. I called it the running man. About a week and a half ago he switched to what I think of as leap frog, head down back out, legs bent on either side. he wedges his toes under my rib cage and pokes his knees out. It makes me more nauseous than the old position but he does fit better that way.

  • Turn out my baby is head down. I feel no kicks up high just a mass that rolls. All movement is low...hiccups and heart all below belly button. So hard to be convinced but okay!
  • At 33 weeks this one is head down but like PP said that's still plenty of time for the baby to flip several more times before the their birth date. My son literally did gymnastics in utero and my doctor said as long as he's not like that on birth day we'll just let him be because there's always the chance after doing spinning babies etc they may flip again, so why go thru the pain. When I went for my week 39 appointment he was head down feet in ribs kicking away! I don't think waiting until 36 weeks is too long at all because in theory you have 4 more weeks for baby to get into position.
  • I can see my son's entire body. Butt on the top left, foot all up in my right rib and he's for sure head down.
  • My doc said today that she is unlikely to flip back because she is big and also bc my uterus is tight (baby #1). Here's to hoping he is right.
  • I am 36 weeks, 4 days and my little guy is heads down. I feel movement low (feels like he's close to my cervix) and kicks in my ribs. He's big...an estimated 6 1/2 lbs over 2 weeks ago (he's probably 7.5 lbs by now).

  • Surprised you feel hiccups near your hips- isn't that sign the baby is NOT breech?
  • Most people say they feel hiccups low when breech as well. I tried not to rely on those.
  • Head down, booty up since about 28 wks. I feel her hands behind my hips, small tickling movements. I don't feel much head movement down there, tech said she's in there tight, just periodic jolts to my cervix. Up high and on the sides I get a lot of kicks, very strong movement. That's the easiest way for me to tell. She rolls from side to side, so her butt goes back and forth under my ribs and sometimes she sticks it way out, not comfy for momma.

Don't rely on hiccup location. I feel them low when sitting, high when standing....it's just not reliable. My DS was breech until the bloody end and I always felt them low.
