Baby Names

Need Other Ideas/Critques

Hello all, DH and I are having such a difficult time coming up with a name for our baby girl due in January.  I prefer more classic names and DH likes more modern names.  My favorites he's vetoed include Camille, Margot.  His only suggestion I vetoed was Ava.  I love Carys but DD1 is Caroline and it's too close.  Also, I really didn't want another 'C' names and I didn't want a name that ended with an 'R' because our last name starts with 'R'.  Our short list right now includes the following:

1. Savannah: I prefer Susannah but DH vetoed and this may be our compromise.  I don't hate it but, don't love it.  I think it sounds Southern and classic but I can see how others would find it trashy.
2. Claire: My first choice but see above.
3. Sloane: I LOVE this name but, DH isn't completely sold.  I will say, I think it sounds better coming from a feminine voice and sounds maybe a little harsh coming from a masculine voice.

I don't like Rose, Grace, Mae as those are a little overdone.  I don't like made up names, either.  i.e. Caroline, Susannah = southern classic.  Kinsey, Paisley = trashy

HELP!

Our DD is Caroline too, and when I was pregnant with DS, our girl names we were thinking of were:

-Katherine NN Kate (although sound kind of similar, I loved how Caroline and Kate sounded together)
    -Emma (popular but classic)
-Eleanor (whole list of NN options)
    -Scarlett
    -Julia
    -Juliet
-Magnolia (love this name for some reason lol)

Good luck! I'm curious to know what y'all decide on with Caroline!

    ETA to add names :)

  • I like the suggestion of a name you can agree on that has a nickname you love. For example, I wanted The name Maisie, but my husband didn't like it, but we were both ok with Margaret as a full name. (We have since changed our minds, but you get the idea.)

    I like Caroline and ....

    Vivian (Vivi?)
    Brooke
    Matilda
    Tabitha
    Blythe

I also like the suggestion of Vera
  • I really, really love Blythe!

    Bridgette
    Gemma
    Eliza
    Marion
    Mabel
    Miranda
    Maren
    Sybil
    Sylvie
  • LOVE Margot, wish your DH would come around on that! All three names you listed are fine, but Sloane is NMS.

    Maybe:

    Abigail

    Alice

    Victoria

    Margaret (nn Margot?)

    Amelia

    Mary

    Charlotte

    Juliet

    Violet

    Emily

    Bernadette

    Matilda

  • What about Georgia?  It's one of my guilty pleasure names, but sounds awful with our last name.
  • Savannah is alright. I don't think it's trashy but I think you could do better. I love Claire and really dislike Sloane.
    Caroline and

    Bethany
    Audrey
    Natalie
    Sabrina
    Bridget

  • When I hear the name Sloane, it makes me think of an 80's teen movie, a la John Hughes.
I have a friend who named his daughter Magnolia, and they call her Olie.
Our daughter is going to be Elizabeth, but I'm already referring to her as Bess.

I think some of the other recommendations here are right. A name that can be shortened or altered at the will of the nameholder will be easier on them in the long run. Sure, she may not be a Georgiana now, but she could be a Georgie. Later, as she's trying to establish herself as an adult, she's got somewhere to go, and she's not strapped with a childish-sounding name. (Purposefully used a name you didn't have listed.)
When all else fails, turn to literature! We went through the entire Anne of Green Gables character list before we settled on Elizabeth (again, sourced from Jane Austen.)
  • Anna
    Alexandra
    Margaret
    Elizabeth
    Eliza
    Cecilia
    Joanna
    Danielle
    Gabriella
    Diane
    Sarah

Agree with PP - love Claire but not with Caroline. Much prefer Susannah to Savannah. Really dislike Sloane

We have a good friend who's daughters name is Georgia. I do love it but DH would veto it.

I also love Margaret (DH vetoed) and really like Elizabeth with a nickname of Libby. I think I'll pressure him more on that one. He vetoed Elizabeth but I think he would soften up to a nickname.

Everyone's suggestions were very helpful and I'll take them to him. The poster who stated that savannah isn't bad but we can do better hit the nail on the head! Those are my thoughts exactly!

I think Claire is our front runner right now but I'm still entertaining lots of suggestions. Thanks!
