  • Both are cute but I think I like Emma slightly more. Emma is also quite a bit more popular, however.
  • Both are beautiful. IMO I would use Ella as nn for Daniella or Elizabeth, and Emma on its own.

  • I prefer Ella. I think it is more classic and overall a prettier less common name that ages better. Gooooo Ella!

Emma is better. Ella is NMS just because it sounds more like a nickname to me.

  • To me, both are pretty trendy and common these days with all the variations and nicknames. That said, when I hear Ella I assume it short for something else. I'd go with Emma.

My niece is named Ella so I'm leaning more that way. Both names are classic popular and not cheap city trend popular, they are both good choices. If you really can't decide, maybe leave it up to the baby when she's born? See which name you feel suits her best. Good luck and congratulations!

ETA no one has ever referenced my niece to the Rihanna song. That would have been more an issue for the Ella's born around the time that came out. I don't hear that song ever anymore, so it's unlikely our children will hear it much, either. If anyone calls her that, it's adults who should know better. Just my opinion ;)
  • I'd choose Emma. It's popular, but I feel like all of the Ella/Ellie names combined are even more popular.

  • They are both just so popular.

  • Both pretty popular but classic names. In pick Ella, seems a little less common and just a little prettier.

  • Emma for sure. Ella just sounds nickname-y and insubstantial.

Both are cute but Emma has far more substance to it. Ella is pretty but almost like half a name. Is it Ellen, or Eleanor, or Elaine...if you know what I mean.

  • Both are cute!  As a full name I'd prefer Emma.

  • I like them both, but as someone who grew up with a hugely popular name, it's frustrating to deal with in school. 10% of the girls in my grade had the same name as me (no lie--some had slightly different spellings, but it's irritating to go by Stephanie K. your whole school career.)

It's a conflict of interest for me to vote. Because I'm an Ella which means I am biased both toward and against the name :)

    Emma is quite lovely..
  • I like them both but they are so popular right now.
  • How about Stella? Ella and Emma are too popular right now IMO

  • Both are cute, but due to how popular Emma was in the 90s and early 00s....I would go for Ella.
  • Isn't anyone else sick of these names????!!!!

Gemma is also a good alternative.
