Pre-employment physical

I have been offered a new job but as a condition for employment I need to pass a physical. Will my pregnancy cause me to fail? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Does your potential employer know you are pregnant? Can you ask about specifically what they will be testing for? I would imagine if they know you are pregnant they wouldn't require something they know you couldn't pass. Are there specific physical aspects of the job, like being able to lift a certain amount of weight? I would just ask a few more questions about the physical, if you can, but I can't think of anything standard that would be on one that you wouldn't be able to do, unless you have more significant specific restrictions for your pregnancy.
  • I have to do an annual physical. The place I usually get it done wouldn't touch me unless my ob signed off. When I sent it to be signed off on he just filled it out, but did state I couldn't lift the 50lbs or help patients transfer. He then added a note that this was a condition of pregnancy, not general health.

That being said I have been at my job awhile and they were aware of my condition. I think that will make the most difference... and it really depends on the physical itself and what it asks for.

  • Like a physical at the dr? I don't believe being pregnant would cause anything different to happen then. They just check your Bp, hr, heart stuff like that. They may check your abdomen in which case they would probably know you're pregnant but I don't think that would affect anything.

Yeah, I just went for a physical. They checked my height, weight, blood pressure. They can't tell pregnancy from any of that. They could have also done a pap but I declined because I just had one last month.

Edit to clarify they never went near my stomach, although my doctor does now I'm pregnant so maybe he otherwise would have? I don't think so, though.
  • Some physicals require you to be cleared to lift a certain amount of weight. In which they will sometimes make you lift it to complete the physical. It really just depends on what your company physical asks for.
