Fever & No Other Symptoms

DD woke up with a fever early Monday morning (2am).  Her temp was 102.4.  She has NEVER had a temp that high.  I took her to her ped and they told me that nothing was wrong, just to treat her with Motrin and keep her comfortable.

She still has the temp.  It ranges from 101.8-102.4.  It hasn't gone down since monday at 2am.  It's almost been 48 hours and I am getting worried.  I don't suspect the fever is from teething.  She has always run a low grade fever when she is teething, but that's pretty high to be tooth related in my opinion.

She has no other symptoms.  No coughing, no runny nose, no throwing up, nothing.  I called her ped again tonight and they told me that if it isn't better tomorrow, to bring her back in.  Which pisses me off, because I will pay another 35 dollar copay for them to tell me nothing wrong.  What would you do?  Has your DC ever gone through something like this?

TIA

Re: Fever & No Other Symptoms

  • Yes, ML has gone through it twice, and TB once. ?It's unnerving but babies just respond to infections in funny ways. ?We go to my cousin for non-checkup appointments (so no copay, so I don't mind going for pretty much every little thing), and he just usually tells me it's a virus, and to treat the symptoms, including potential dehydration. ?He says the time to get alarmed is when the fever will not respond to medication.
  • Oh, I meant to add...the last time it happened, they both had it, and it turned out quite a few of their preschool cousins did too. ?All their cousins broke out into a rash afterwards, which helped determine it to be roseola. ?ML broke out into a rash also, but a very minor one, and she breaks out into a minor rash pretty much every time she has some sort of viral infection. ?TB had the fever, and that was it.

  • DD got that fever thing the day after Xmas.  It got HIGH.  It topped out at 104.5 one evening and we were giving her Motrin around the clock (every 6 hours I think).  Then we added Tylenol in the mix and gave her that every 4 hrs.  The Tylenol is what worked better in bringing down the fever.  And finally after 3-4 days she was better.  Fever disappeared.  And like you said, it was never anything more than a fever.

I hope you DC feels better soon!

  • If there are no other symptoms, I wouldn't take her back just yet. She could end up with a rash tomorrow or Thursday since the fever started so early in the am. Then it would just be roseola since it's so common. If she is acting fine otherwise, just treat the fever.

Also, DD woke up with a fever one morning. No other symptoms. 2 days later I took her in and found out she had a double ear infection. We didn't treat it and it went away on it's own.

Is the fever dropping with the motrin at all?

  • Sorry, I just re-read that the fever has not gone down. Have you tried tylenol?
  • This has happened to Kate twice.  Both times her fever ranged from 102-105 for 6 straight days. No other symptoms.  She was tested for UTI, pnemonia and ear infection and didn't have any of them, so pedi said it was a virus.  We just gave her motrin and kept her hydrated and after 6 days the fever finally broke.
  • if she's acting OK I'd give it a week or so.
