Is Melatonin ok during pregnancy?

im 28 weeks today and my sleep patterns are really starting to get off whack. Not to mention the restless legs starting to show its face at night...making it even harder to fall asleep. Has anyone had their doctor to tell them that 3mg of melatonin is ok? I would not take it on a regular basis. Maybe once a week on the nights I'm desperate for a good night sleep. I've tried Tylenol PM...but the Benadryl in that makes the RLS even worse. I can't imagine that Tylenol PM being labeled as safe but melatonin not being safe during pregnancy...especially when our bodies produce it naturally. Thanks for your help ladies! Oh the joys of pregnancy!!!!

  • Different docs will have diff answers. I've asked 3 of the docs I've seen and 1said yes and 2 said no! While Tylenol is on the safe list of meds during pregnancy it (I believe) is still a cat c medication. Have you tried unisom? I find the sleep tabs aren't harsh, but deff help get me to sleep and feel rested. I also had a issue with restless legs prior to trying and it seems to have helped with that!

Heading to Target right now. I will definitely check out the Unisom. Thank you!

From everything I've read it is not.
  • My OB said nothing over 3mg.. But if I'm having troubles to take unisom and use melatonin as a last resort... But I wouldn't try it.. There are pregnancy safe options so I would just use those..
  • Our bodies produce melatonin naturally. I have taken 1mcg melatonin off and on before bed for years. My OB practice rotates doctors at each appt and Ive met with 5 OBs so far. All are fine with melatonin and the nurses and/or Lna's also review meds/supplements with me. I also told the nurse practitioner at my pcp's office when i had my 1st blood test done to confirm the pregnancy. Never once has this supplement come up as unsafe or potentially risky. In the event that all of these medical professionals are just plain wrong, call with your own Dr's office 1st if you're not sure.
  • Also, ask your Dr about a turmeric supplement (or just eat some turmeric) to help with your restless legs. Good luck!

I tend to go with what the bottle says and my bottle says not to take while pregnant so I went with that. I never bothered to ask my OB so if you really feel you need something ask your Dr or MW.
  • Unison has melatonin in it. 3 mg is fine my doctor said and it was included in a list of medications given to me that are safe during pregnancy.
  • Spelling error unisom... Lol
  • I take it once in a while. Sometimes I think that it's not so much "not safe for pregnancy" it's more that nobody has done the pricey research to figure out if it is. Big pharma has big money, typically herbal supplements distributors do not. I would rather take melatonin than Tylenol PM anyday. But I'm 25 weeks and have probably taken it 5 times total. I diffuse lavender essential oil and that really helps me.

  • I take one every night. Have my entire pregnancy. My doctors office prescribes it to their patients.
  • There is no meltatonin in unisom sleep tabs.
  • I've been prescribed Phenergan to help me sleep. It's a sedating antihistamine.
  • I take it occasionally. The research goes both ways.
The melatonin I have is the gummy form. You're supposed to take 2 gummies - which are 3MG total. I take half of one and it's enough to get me to sleep. It's not even 1mg.
Unisom works sometimes too but if I don't have 8 hours to sleep I can be groggy.
  • Just an added word of caution, we all have different medical histories and personal chemistries.  What a doctor has said is just fine for one of us, could be incredibly harmful to another.  Always ask your own OB who is familiar (or at least has access to) your specific medical history before taking someone's advice on meds, supplements, or activities that you question.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • This is the pic of the unisom my doctor recommended which has melatonin
  • Benadryl!!! Unless you have a paradoxical reaction and it makes you restless. As an added bonus it also helps with night urination.
  • Regular unisom sleep tabs which are also on the safe list during pregnancy contain no melatonin. I've never heard of the "natural nights" unisom. Based on what my doctors have told me, some saying melatonin is safe some saying it's not I don't take it, all have agreed, however that unisom sleep tabs are fine.
  • I took a unisom sleep tab for the first time last night and it was glorious! I still had to wake up to go to the bathroom but rather than being awake for another hour after that trying to get comfy, I fell back asleep immediately. I'm groggy this morning but I have time to snap out of it, so I'm okay with that!
