Infertility

New and Scared...

I started my first injections today and I am pretty terrified of the next few weeks to come. Background: I have had so many ectopic pregnancies that I have lost count. Most were treated with methotrexate and 1 tube ruptured which led to an emergency surgery to remove one of my tubes. I am 36 and I am scared to whats to come.
I am scared of possible ectopic in my one tube, I am scared of side effects to medications, I am scared of retrieval. Is it normal to be this chicken??

Re: New and Scared...

  • I haven't done IVF yet but I'm sure I would be just as nervous. Visit these boards whenever you feel anxious and we will try to make you feel better. :-) think of the end result. Your baby. :-)
  • I have done four rounds of IVF. To be honest, the only side effect I have had from the medications is bloating. I was scared of the egg retrieval too. But, after my first one was over I realized it really isn't that bad. You are asleep for it. You are a little crampy and tired the day of, but I always felt fine the next day and went to work. Try to stay positive. It really does help with this journey. Good luck!

  • ***warning BFP mentioned**** I was scared at first too but the process is more emotional at least for me than actual pain. The intramuscular shots hurt a little but it's not too bad. Your trigger shot will be intramuscular and so will the progesterone in oil which you usually start after retrieval. I am not sure your protocol because some people do progesterone suppositories. However the shot doesn't last long. The retrieval you will be under anesthesia so you won't be awake. Some women felt mild cramping. I did and I pretty much slept a lot for the remainder of the day. They will schedule your retrieval when most of your follies will measure 18-22mm at retrieval. You should also be going into the doctor frequently for ultrasounds and bloodwork so they can monitor your levels and the size. Depending on the transfer either 3 or 5 days you will start estrace and the progesterone. The hardest part for me was having to go through the 2ww and my first cycle which was a fresh transfer was negative. I just did a frozen transfer and I have my first ever BFP. Good luck through your cycle and if you have any questions or need to vent we are here. Also remember that we all don't have the same experiences so you might have some side effects from the meds or they might not effect you. I took all of my meds at night and then went to sleep. I didn't really notice any side effects. Except constipation when I started progesterone shots. Also make sure the nurse draws a circle where you should do the Trigger shot and the progesterone shots. Good luck!

  • I'm going through it right now, and it's not that bad. It does suck, but it's a blessing that I have this option to try to get pregnant. You can do it! You're a stong woman who will get through this and look back on this time grateful you went through it.
  • Thank you, it is comforting knowing I am not alone. I haven't told any of my family because We have been through so much disappointment. So my hubby is the only one, but he doesn't understand. Yes I need to focus on the goal here. Baby!!
  • Best wishes to you! We're here for you- I haven't been through IVF but really appreciate the community here and I hope it can help make things a little more familiar and less scary for you! So sorry about your losses. I can relate, and pray you don't have to endure that any more- only positive outcomes!
