Keep it all together! (Hadn't seen a thread like this yet, and figured it might be helpful.)

I'll start. My story is Awkward.

I had a shower at which I received 0 actual presents.

When my husband and I were up visiting his parents in his rural hometown, population 110, his sister decided to throw me a shower. After five years, I have become fairly used to the well-meaning-but-often-oddly-functioning denizens of his family and their friends circle, but I was still pretty surprised when 11 guests came, and no one brought any presents to open! (One person did put some cash in a card, and another... mailed an Amazon gift card to my house?) Obviously, there was no gift opening... so we just sat in an awkward circle and drank punch for like two hours.

At least there were cookies! I think I ate like ten, because I just didn't know what to do with my hands otherwise...

I had a really awkward moment at my shower. DH's family threw a shower for his side of the family - very large, his parents have 17 or so siblings total. We played a game and the prize was a "Spa Bag." It had a small bottle of wine, bubble bath, a loofah, and a gift card for a movie rental. The aunt that won it - who is about 50 years old - opened it and said "What are we supposed to do with this? Get drunk and touch ourselves?" 

I thought this was the most awkward moment ever.... 

Then a cousin pipes up with, "Maybe we should give that to Sarah (me) for DH to use after baby comes! He won't be able to get any for a while."

I hosted a shower for my sister when she was pregnant with her first 9 years ago. One guest gave her a jumbo box of diapers. She had used a label maker to label every.single.diaper in the box and asked my sister to read each one of them. It started off kind of cute, "For my 3:00 am change", but it got really repetitive and was just not funny by about the 5th diaper. There are only so many witty remarks you can make about a box of Pampers.

@wee3kings - we did that as a little game for a friend's shower. We had packs of newborn diapers and all the guests wrote a message on them for middle of the night diaper changes. Some were funny, some were prayers or bible verses, just whatever they thought would help get Mama through the night. I think reading them out loud at the shower would ruin the fun of it!

The awkward: DH's aunt is chronically late and missing details for important things. For instance, if she is supposed to bring Jell-O to a holiday gathering at her sister's, she'll show up late and have a box of Jello-O that she intends to make in the host's kitchen...at the time of the meal. When my friend threw my shower for DD, that aunt was the one who didn't get the memo on the baby's sex, and she showed up with a basket of odds and ends from a garage sale, all of which were heavily geared toward little boys and the sizes were opposite the season when DD would need short sleeves vs. long sleeves. The only awkward part was me trying to be excited about it and her also not recognizing that we were having a girl until after she was born. The good news is, all of those gifts can now be put to use (if we didn't donate some of them) with our son when he arrives this fall. 

The sweet: My paternal grandmother gifted us with the "take home outfit" that she brought my dad home from the hospital in (yellow and knit). She also included his favorite childhood book and a couple notes for our first child. She only had one child (my dad) and you could tell that she'd been waiting awhile to be able to pass these items on to her great grandchildren. It was the one gift that had me in tears!

Not having a shower this time around, but a touching story from my first - I have an aunt who didn't have kids, and loves her nieces and nephews like her own.  At my shower, she gave me a blanket that my great grandma knit for her kids that was passed on to her.  It was so unexpected and meaningful and made me cry all over the place.

@TheSouffleGirl that is awkward! My MIL threw me a little, impromptu shower with my last baby when i visited near my inlaws. I think i got three gifts, so many of my SO's family showed up with extra people, hardly anybody spoke to me and then they tried to take the leftover dessert and my BIL stepped in and shut that down (he knows cheesecake is my heart and he was baffled by their behavior). My SO was not with me and he was mortified. I thought it was funny because he never would admit to how awkward his people were until that "shower".

A friend of mine had a shower thrown by her bff. They invited a ton of people and her house was small. Everybody came, there was no space,it was so hot, there was barely enough food and drink and i had to hold my dd the entire time (they ask us to bring kids as if they had a plan for little ones) and she ended up spitting up into a crowd of people. The hostess has since had a child and I'm sure recognizes the train wreck that was that shower. And it's also why i feel like if you have tons of friends and a big family, you need to either do two regular sized showers or plan for the fiasco it could become.

Cute story: my husband came and opened gifts with me, we got a cute giraffe. The gift giver told him to wind it so it would play music.. After looking at it he pulled on the tail and said I can't get it to work. Everyone started cracking up and I just looked at him asking what sound did you think would come out of its butt? He later found the winding knob.

Awkward: we are team green but my mom isn't happy about it as she wants to know and only talks about buying little girl things. She got us a purple and green sleeper with hat and mittens with flowers on it. All I could think is if we have a boy I'm going to dress him in it and send it to her asking how he looks?

I have another shower this weekend so I'm sure I'll be back with more stories!

This happened to my poor, sweet SIL. They were team green. Her mother bought TONS of frilly, pink, lacy, girl clothes and gave them to her at the shower. Everyone was really confused and we were all giving some serious side-eye. And guess what...they had a beautiful, perfect baby boy! And I truly hope he never sees the baby shower pictures because I know if I knew a grandparent was disappointed that I wasn't a boy I would be heartbroken and have a hard time with that. People can be so inconsiderate of other people's feelings. The disappointment over the sex of a baby thing is a hot topic for me.

My husband is from Michigan, we live in NC now. Over the 4th we had a small family cookout. It was not intended as a shower but his aunt brought gifts. She had quilted a blanket for our baby using quilt squares that my husband's grandmother (who passed away almost 20 years ago) had made but never had the chance to use. I couldn't hold back the tears!

I'm really socially awkward and my hubby is always the life of the party. I told him he had to come to the shower and left him no choice.

While we were there and all eyes were on us opening gifts, he knew that I was really uncomfortable so he was joking around and put on a bib with a little giraffe on it that says "how tall am I?" He is 6'6" so it was pretty funny. After that, he started trying to guess what the baby items were as we were opening them. People ended up paying more attention to him trying to decipher what everything was than to me opening gifts. It was really sweet

Not my shower, but one I just attended. 

This was so moving.

My friend's mom sewed her a changing mat with 3 pockets and removable pads. One pocket had the extra pad, one pocket had the friend's grandma's baby booties- yes, baby booties that her grandma wore many years ago, still in mint condition. The last pocket had a brooch that belonged to my friend's great grandmother, after whom the baby is named. It was a 100 yr old piece of jewelry. That was the most beautiful gift I've ever seen.My friend didn't even know that thing exited, and the fact that the baby is named after this person is just so poetic. I thought I was in a movie... unreal.
