Unique names that you actually like

edited July 2015 in Baby Names
It's apparent that several bumpies are not crazy about certain types of unique names. I prefer classic names myself, but I am curious to hear of unique names that you do like.

Edited: added a word... or three.

  • I like classic names, but I like unique, but yet real names on other's kids. My GP name is Lavender. I fell in love with that name when watching Matilda.

I like older names that most people just don't use much anymore, Orville, Otis, Lyle, Sylvester.
  • Agreed with pp's. I don't have a problem with "unique" names, I have a problem with trendy made up names/spellings.

    favorites include

Sybil, Delphine, Persephone, Lenora, Minerva, Lyle, Clarence, Bernard, Thaddeus, and I could keep going.

Super, super guilty pleasure for Horst, but that name doesn't work well in English.
  • Oh and Crispin! Love love love it!

  • Ditto pp's. Unique because uncommon is very different than creative spellings to appear unique.

I'm a fan of less common Hebrew names.
Girls: Aviva, Chaya, Esther, Miriam, Talia, Yael
    Boys: Ari, Judah

  • I fell in love with the name Anniston the very first time that I saw it.... I wasn't interested in any other names once I found it. Anniston Belle is my daughters name. :)

You can always just do Shanna/Shana. Both are out of the top 1000 now (and have been for a while )
  • I actually like the name River for a boy, but I would not name my son River because I feel like going through life with a name like that might be a burden.
  • Our kids have Irish names, but I LOVE old school Gaelic names but would never use them since they are so hard to pronounce (this has plagued my sister in law her whole life).

Ex. Saoirse, Aoife, Niamh, Padraig, Ruaidhri, etc.

I love several names that are out of the ordinary.

Orson, Stellan, Alden, Kai, River, and several others. For girls I have always like Sylvia.

I dislike names that people throw together. Alphabet soup belongs in a can not on a person

  • I love unique/uncommon names!

Our top girl name is Poppy.

I love Maeve, Bryony, Noelle, Raisa for girls. I also love Avonlea, even though it's technically made up, just because I've always been a big Anne of Green Gables fan. And I've loved Veda since I watched My Girl for the first time as a kid.

For boys, my fave unique names are Ryland, Rhys, Killian, and Wilder.

I love unique names like Calliope, Lavinia, Paloma, Maren, etc. indon't like made up special snowflake names like Makinsee, Charlee, Brylee, etc.

Kalliope is my great aunts name and I love it! We call her Kelly though, but you could use Kalli as Nn. I also love my yiayia's (Greek for grandma) name which is Kanella! We call her Kenny! Also their sister was named Anastasia (called her Dolly) but love all the Greek names!

  • Rhue for a girl. Of course after hunger games it may be more popular.
  • I like old people names, which are pretty unique right now... Ralph, Stanley, Harvey, Otis. Maxine, Calista, Edith, Miriam.
  • Orson, Solomon, Archer, Miriam, Magdalene, Posey, Paloma, Odessa, Della

  • Allegra is a total gp name of mine but I would never use it because of the allergy medication. I also love Winter, Misha, Meadow, Stevie (for a girl), Daisy and Gia but I would never use them in real life.
For some strange reason I also really like the name Norman. It's totally nerdy but I like saying it.
  • I'm seriously considering Olive if I get a girl.

  • Girls:
    Camilla
    Rowan
    Rosalind
    Winifred
Iphigenia (TERRIBLE name if you know your Greek mythology but I still like it)
    Livia

Karyn (I know it is a youneek spelling but I just really like it)

    Boys:
    Warren
    Dorian

  • My guilty pleasure name is Daenerys, which only exists on GoT, so I would never actually name a child that.  But I love the sound of it (hate the spelling).
  • This is a great board for name suggestions! Thanks OP. I like Dagny, Maisie, Arizona, Isolde, Quetzel and Naomi. My spouse isn't a big fan.
  • I've always liked

Right not I'm really loving looking out for awesome unique names. I'm mostly finding girls' ones.

    Margot
    Maren
    Georgia
    Sloane
    Cara
    Anya

I suggested Naomi to DH and apparently there's a movie quote... "Her name is Naomi-- it spells "I moan" backwards" so that ruined it for me.

  • Rosalind and Cecily are on the short list if this turkey comes out a girl. I love the nn Rosie, and the Literary references really get me.

I adore Kelly/Kelley for a boy, but I just couldn't do that to a child since it's so ingrained as a girl's name after the 80s ruined it.

FWIW, I have a nephew named Kelly, it seems to be on an uptick of people reclaiming it.
