breastfeeding problem

My daughter is just a couple days old and I have been breastfeeding her but I suppose she wasnt latched on correctly cause now I have this bruise on one of my nipples and its hard for her to latch on to my other nipple. I still have a couple of days before my milk comes in so I can't pump and I already had to give her formula once cause it was becoming to much go handle.. What can I do to make the bruising go away? I don't want to give up on breastfeeding but I can't take i the pain of her breastfeeding on the bruised nipple

Re: breastfeeding problem

  • I used a nipple shield when mine were sore and it really helped.
  • Feed on the other side and pump the side that's bruised. You can still get colostrum to give to the baby and pumping will help you milk come in sooner.

Pump! Atleast for 10-15 minutes it will help your milk come in!
  • The nipple shield was like magic for me. My baby is a breastfeeding champ now.

Same here...with first had to use it for awhile with this baby we used it for 3 or 4 days. It helped a lot!
  • If you can I'd suggest seeing a lactation consultant. They'll be able to look at your latch and help you establish one that won't hurt. Breastfeeding isn't supposed to hurt! I'm currently using a nipple shield with my LO and supplementing with expressed Breastmilk in a dropper, she's had a lot of trouble latching and sucking effectively! Good luck
  • I would suggest a lactation consultant as well. I had a similar problem. I also hand expressed and pumped colostrum then fed my LO with a syringe or teaspoon. She's 11 days new today and feeding strong despite our challenges in the first few days.
  • Pump girl! It will save your nips...I was getting milk blisters & a bit of a bruise on the right...I started pumping & it has helped them heal Immensely
  • I worked with a lactation consultant who definitely helped with latching. My family doctor also prescribed me this "doctor Newman nipple ointment" worked wonders.

I too had severe bruising, cracking and scabbing (not fun!)

  • You can still pump even though your milk hasn't come in. Mine came in 2 days after I started pumping. I got almost 4 ounces from one boob when it came in.
