Hi everyone!
I have done four rounds of IVF (we banked our embryo's due to ovarian failure). After 5 months, we are finally getting ready for the transfer this week and I am starting progesterone oil IMI tomorrow night! I am sooooo nervous! Does anybody have any tips?
Thank you so much!!

Re: Progesterone in Oil Shots

  • I fill the syringe then put it on a heating pad. Fold over the pad and hop in the shower. By the time I get out the syringe is ready. It wasn't nearly as painful this way and the oil dispersed easily. My husband then rubbed the area afterward for a minute or so. Never got a lump! I've never messed with ice or anything like that.

I agree with pp, she gave me the same advice and it worked better than icing makes it hurt more because it's thick so the ice doesn't help. Good luck

  • Question- so you are suggesting warming the oil prior to injecting? I've been suffering through these shots for weeks and may need to continue them for another month, so that may be a great tip for me to try. I'm icing right now due to the discomfort and stinging. Do you apply hear afterwards?
  • Fill the syringe then put the syringe on the heating pad and fold it over. This thins the oil and makes it easier to go in. I also found that the warmed needle helped too. I did not ice at all. Before or after. Was never necessary. Rub the area for a minute or two afterward to make sure all oil is dispersed and no lumps form and go on your way.
  • Btw, not going to lie. My butt was still a bit sore afterward. But that is the nature of the beast of doing IM injections. I haven't done them for 4 weeks now and I can still feel a few injection spots when I run. However when my husband would do the injections, sometimes I couldn't even feel him doing them after we started warming.
  • Oh wow congratulations! I bet you're so excited to get started! Very wise of you to bank your embryos :) For progesterone in oil, I would actually put the vile in your bra for 20 minutes or so to get it to body temp before you inject. Also do not use the same needle to draw out the meds as you do to inject. Using a sharper needle makes all the difference. As long as you take the shot in the right spot it won't really hurt. A lot of the shots to the stomach actually hurt worse for me.

  • I agree with pp. when I went to the doctor for my transfer yesterday I asked the nurse to show my husband where to inject the progesterone.  I was telling her how painful it was and she said that it was too low.  She drew two hearts right above my butt and to the sides.  She said this is mostly muscle and away from any nerves.  He gave me the shot last night and there was no pain at all!  Having the POI warmer and injecting in the right spot made such a difference.  You also have to try different things to see what works for you we are all different.  Good luck :)

  • I've been doing progesterone injections for several weeks now. Truly, they aren't as bad as I expected. I don't do anything fancy to prep for them, though I do make sure the oil is kept at room temperature. Make sure to rub the injection site following the injection, otherwise you may get a lump. Well, you may get a lump anyway, but maybe it won't be so bad. Good luck! ;)
  • Thank you so much ladies!!!!! Tonight was night #2 of the progesterone oil injections. I am not going to lie, I cried for a half hour before we actually did the injection last night. The anxiety leading up to it was so much worse than the actual injection. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would! We warmed up the oil as all of you suggested and I took a very hot shower right before. I also but a small ice pack on the spot for about 30 seconds just before we did it to kind of numb the top layer of skin. Thank you so much for all of your advice!! It is greatly appreciated!!

My nurse said to apply the heat to make sure the oil is dispersed and doesn't coagulate from your skin being cold. @teresaa125

  • @welovehawaii thanks for the suggestion! I'm using a heating pad right now to stop the stinging. Wondering if I am not injecting in the correct spot...
