August 2015 Moms

Southern mamas

My last pregnancy DD was born July 20th. We had a crazy cool front and it was actually 70 degrees the night we left the hospital, so baby had on socks and mittens. It's going to be over 100 degrees if I make it till the 7th and at 100 degrees if I deliver before. Does baby need socks/mittens? She will be covered in a blanket while in the car, but I don't want to make her too warm or cold. My doc said the light blanket should be fine without socks/mittens. I'm just curious to hear from other mamas who have delivered in the south in this heat (I'll be delivering in Houston).

  • Sorry no advice because I'm in Michigan. Thinking about mittens in 70* weathers is hilarious!

The little mittens the hospital give us are the ones that are really thin, and I fully believe are only to keep baby from scratching face. But yes, the thought is hilarious!!

  • Oh! Like the Gerber brand ones you can buy at the store...gotchya!
  • FTM but I'm not planning on getting mittens. Baby's coming home outfit is a long sleeve footed sleeper with a cap so I thought that plus a receiving blanket would be plenty.

I'm in DC which is no Houston but it's usually around 90 with a lot of humidity this time of year.

  • I'm in San Antonio and I'll just be doing a short sleeve onesie and socks with a receiving blanket over her in the car.
  • It will be in the high 90s to 100s here, just a light blanket should be fine, but I am bringing socks for while we are in the hospital.
  • I've been told (and agree with based on my first dsughter) that babies only need one thin layer more than you are comfortable with. My daughter will likely come home (in Georgia) in a onesie with a super breathable blanket draped over her-that's it. If you aren't sure, feel baby's tummy. Arms and legs can be deceiving, but the tummy will tell you if they are hot or cold.

  • I'm in Lafayette, Louisiana. I'll be using a light blanket, thin mittens to prevent scratching, and a sun hat to cover her face. And DH will definitely be cooling off the car before we get into it.
  • Thanks ladies! All my babies have come home in different weather, so I wasn't sure. I'm packing everything just in case, but think we are just going to go with a light blanket over her.

  • I'm delivering in Houston as well... A footed sleeper with a light blanket will be plenty, I think :)

I delivered my 3rd in Houston in hot Aug heat and all she wore home was a onesie and light blanket covering her.
  • I'm in Houston as well. I'm bringing a short sleeved onesie and a light blanket. I'm not sure if the hospital provides mittens but I'll get a pair just in case for the scratching.
  • Idk what hospital you are delivering at, but with my last delivery in a Methodist hospital, they gave us a pair for her.

  • Yeah methodist at Willowbrook. Thanks for the tip!
  • Ahhhh....good ole Houston heat. I'm going to put mittens on my son just so he won't scratch his face, but with me literally having an end of summer baby (Aug 31st), socks and hats may be out of the question, unless my husband cools down the car for about 20 mins first lol. I had my daughter 3 years ago in October and it was HOT!
  • When we left the hospital, it was well over 90. Baby went home in a onesie dress and a cotton cardigan- no socks, mittens, or hat!
  • FTM delivering in Tennessee. I am bringing socks and mittens for the hospital but not to come home in.

  • I'm in Corpus Christi and my two other kids were born in July and August. I brought them both home in onesie's with little pants and a light receiving blanket. This little one will be brought home in similar he isn't going to be in the heat much so I don't see him getting too warm.
  • I'm in Waco and I think I'm just gonna throw a onsie on her. If she's anything like my son she's gonna burn up... lol. I'm just gonna throw a thin blanket over her car seat and super thin socks and mitts on her hands and feet and walk out. Why is Texas so hot! #:-S
  • I'm in Waco too and have a cute outfit for her to go home in but an A+A blanket to throw on just in case. My first was a December baby so this is completely different for us!
  • Located in greater Houston-- I packed a short sleeve onesie, receiving blanket, hat, scratch mittens, sock.. but will probably only use the first 2 items listed.

  • We live in Arizona, good lawd it's a dry heat. Just planning on a onsie or cotton night gown and a lightweight blanket for in the car. Other than that no need to bundle up
  • Houston mama here, we packed shorts and a onesie. I do plan on covering him up with a blanket since we keep our car cool. You could always just bring socks and mittens and if her/his feet feel cold you can put them on. I'm sure the socks and mittens could be used more in the hospital since it's usually cool in there.

This is the 2nd baby that I will be bringing home in FL in August. I dress them for the inside more than the outside. Here's what we're bringing her home in. It is light weight, and it does cover her feet although you can't tell in the pic. I will put the little mittens on her as well.
  • Wow we have a lot of texas moms here! I will be bringing ds home in a carters onesie set with matching pants and matching cap. :) i expect the humidity to be horrendous as usual here
