Regretting my decision

So, I had my OB appointment today. I am 36w 4d and doctor offered to do cervical check. I had it in my head that I was going to opt out, but of course curiosity took over and I had my OB do it. While, it wasn't too painful, I now find myself so uncomfortable with cramping and have started spotting. Why do I do this to myself? I did the same thing with my first. I guess this preggo will never learn. Just trying to relax. Have my feet propped up and catching up on some TV shows.

  • I was thinking about getting mine checked but then my Dr said she thought it was the worst part of prenatal appointments for her from when she was pregnant

So yeah, I quickly made up my mind to not!

  • I said i didnt feel the need for it unless she felt there was a good reason. My Dr said they like to do it at 36 weeks to have a baseline...
  • Best not to get one if its so uncomfortable.

I was set on not getting one either, but last Thursday during my nst, the doctor came rushing in after the nurse gave her my strip. I had a few (though irregular) contactions (which I tell them I have all the time and they say it's normal) so she acted like I was going into labor right then and there. She checked and I wasn't even slightly dialated. That night, worst cramps ever, and that morning I had some of my mucus plug come out....

  • In Australia or at my hospital anyways they don't do cervix checks I asked my midwife and she just said they don't want to mess around to much down there untill I'm in labour
I wanted it done just to see I am very curious though :-/
  • I was checked Tuesday but no cramping or discomfort. I'm sorry for you ladies!

  • I've been getting checked for several week now and haven't had any of these bizzaire things happen! Wow!
  • I have had it in my head that I won't get one done this pregnancy either, but I know I won't be able to resist.  My dr won't do it until 38 weeks though.

Sorry you had such a bad reaction!

  • Everytime I've ever been checked I had cramping after. Which they warned me spitting was also possible.

I have to be checked again next week. Blah. I hate that part of pregnancy lol. The plus side? In labor, if you have an epidural, they are pretty dang easy.. Hahaha
  • I had one done after my strep test at 36 weeks and I really didn't think it was too bad. I don't know if I had any cramping from it since I went straight in to work after my appointment. I just decided to opt out of them until they are required at 39 weeks because it slows down the appointment and doesn't really matter. I will admit though that I am curious to see if I have made any progress at all by my 39 week appointment.
  • I'm no stranger to the speculum unfortunately (IF treatments) but this test was just awful. I didn't have pain afterwards fortunately, but I think I almost jumped off the damn table during the test. I wasn't nearly as nervous about the prospect of child birth until that test. Not sure if I'm just more sensitive down there now because the baby is putting some pressure on me, but that was just brutal.

In Ontario, Canada they don't usually do them until 38 weeks. Even when you are in labour they don't often do them unless they think you have actually progressed. They don't want to introduce germs down there, or at least that is what they told me when I was in labour after my water broke on its own. I was on Pitocin and contracting really hard, I wanted the Epidural but they won't give it to you until you 3-4 cm's, I was convinced I had to be at least that far but they didn't think so - it turns out they were right and I wasn't very far at all :(
