Just finding out

So I was talking to my mom about how my husband has heart issues and how we're not sure on whether he was born with it or not. She then goes and tells me she was born with the same thing. A heart murmur. So now my question is I know some heart defects are genetic could this one be too? I don't want to overreact. My mom has been known to make things up about herself to get attention but to say she has a heart issue when she doesn't is something I don't think she would do. At my radiology appointment everything seemed fine but at 20 weeks I didn't know about this so I'm not positive they would look harder. Sorry it's so long but I'm one worried FTM

Re: Just finding out

  • A lot of people are born with mumurs which can mean absolutely nothing. If your DH has a heart condition then I am guessing they will screen baby once it's born. Tell your ob about it and go from there.

  • I think they would look hard whether you tell the family history or not. History is only a piece of the pie. If the doctors saw anything to be concerned by they would let you know. We have the ability to worry our little selves to the insane asylum. I'm certain your LO is fine! But call and confirm with your doctor. He dr can ease your mind
  • I was born with a heart murmur and it went away within a year. I think it's pretty common.
  • Most murmurs are nothing to worry about. They will monitor baby if they are concerned they will have an echocardiogram done. It's not a big deal. Please don't work yourself up.

  • I know at my office they're very conscious about studying the heart during the anatomy scan. They studied every single inch of baby's heart, so maybe your office is the same! I'm sure if something was wrong they'd have found it!
  • My doctor detected a heart murmur in me a few years ago, so I went and got an EKG, and Echocardiogram. All I ever got back from that was that everything looks fine.. Doctor said he thinks it's harmless. People can get murmurs from being dehydrated. Don't stress about it! I would think they'd have picked it up by now if there was anything to worry about.. And I know babies personally who were born with multiple heart murmurs, and are just fine and healthy today!
  • As the PP's have said, most heart murmurs are nothing to worry about - if there is any concern at all, they might monitor it on an annual or semi-annual basis.

Honestly, even if the baby does have a more significant heart issue, so many heart issues are incredibly treatable or manageable these days.  There is a heart defect that runs in my dad's family where people have a loose valve that worsens over time and ultimately allows blood to flow backwards.  4 people in his family had it monitored their whole lives, then had surgery in their 30's or 40's to correct the issue.  They're all completely fine today.  So even something more serious may be completely treatable and just mean ongoing monitoring for a long time!  Especially if they didn't see anything on the a/s I wouldn't be too worried.
  • My OB found that I have a right branch bundle block in my heart when I was 13 weeks. They suspect I was born with this but it was never detected prior to being pregnant due to the excess blood circulating in my body with baby. I was sent to a high risk doctor ti get a level 2 ultrasound to check baby's heart to make sure baby wasn't going to have the same issues. I think if you had the murmur it would've been necessary to check into things but since it's your husband maybe it's not much of a concern?...
  • The hole in my daughter's heart didn't close as quickly as they would have liked, so we had to have a cardiology consult (can't remember what it was called). It closed fine on its own though I'm not going to say it wasn't terrifying when you're told your newborn needs an ultrasound within days of their birth.

I have a murmur I found out about randomly when I went in with pericarditis (inflammation of sac around heart - mine was from a random virus) when I was like 25 or 26. He just mentioned it in passing, and I was like whaaa? Apparently lots of people have them, and its just not that big of a deal. I mentioned it to my mom, and she was like, "yea I kinda remember something like that from either you or your sister when you were little." It was even more surprising because I had severe PSVT as a child/teenager that was corrected through a catheter ablation when I was 21. Despite having 3 cardiologists over those years, multiple monitors, EKGs, stress tests, etc... no one ever told me I had a heart murmur. Apparently it just wasn't a concern.
  • I had one as a baby. It closed on its own within a year or so. My sister, on the other hand was born with one as well and hers required open heart surgery at age 4.

Because of my sister my OB sent me to a specialist when I was regnant with DS. While there the specialist basically told me that my sister having one didn't really mean anything and the likekyhood of my baby having it was still extremely low. DS is fine and I reclined going to the specialist this go round.

I wouldn't stress about it. He said cases like my sisters are extremely rare.

  • I have genetic heart defects in my family, and I have a mitral valve prolapse (heart murmur) that I didn't know a out till I was 25, which dr said is pretty benign right now. Drs, regardless of history, pay alot of attention to development of our babies including the heart, so If they saw Soemthing they were worried about they'd let you know. It's usually major heredity defects and issues that flag drs to send for specialists.

Just breathe and relax, I am sure little one is just fine. :). Even if she/he has a murmur, many people have them and can be addressed if needed.
