Ok strange question about water breaking...

Not that it matters really since I have a scheduled c-section already planned (my dr won't do a vbac)... But I always hear people talking about a gush of liquid when your water breaks... but what if you are ina pool or bath tub?!? Would you still feel the gush? Lol. Told you. Weird question.

Re: Ok strange question about water breaking...

  • I had a gradual break but some women have described it as feeling a "pop" which I imagine you would feel regardless of where you are.

  • This is possibly what happened to me with DD2. I had and felt a pop sensation while in the shower but no fluid came out when I looked down. I just finished showering and went on my day. Soon after (20 minutes?) contractions started and I had my daughter. At the hospital they asked when my water broke to which I replied "it hasn't" but they informed me it had clearly broke. I am assuming it broke in the shower when I had that pop sensation and it was just a really slow leak because her head was already engaged.

  • I was wondering this too since I have been spending a lot of time at the pool. :P
  • I've always been paranoid about this too. When my water broke with DS I did not hear or feel any pop, so had I been in the tub or shower I do not think I would have noticed (was also just a slow trickle). Luckily I was in the hospital so I knew.

When my water broke, it trickled until I delivered like, ten hours later. So, if you were swimming, you would probably catch on pretty quickly that you weren't drying off in certain areas! I'd be curious to hear from other moms whose water broke if theirs actually broke in one gush and then stopped.
  • When mine broke with my second it happend early morning I was laying in bed and it felt like I wet myself. I got up walked into the kitchen and water wouldn't stop trickling down my leg. I didn't hear a pop or anything though and remember calling my mom and telling her it's almost like I keep peeing myself and it won't stop and asking her if my water broke.
  • After my water broke it was a consistent leak. So, even after the initial combustion, it kept leaking for a good hour or so.

  • Our labor and delivery nurse told us even if you have a "pop" you will still continue to leak over time.. even if you have a gush.

  • Mine was kind of a gush, but I didn't feel anything really.  It felt like I peed my pants without feeling the sensation of peeing (if that makes sense).  I was just laying there and noticed I had water dripping down my legs.

  • With my first I felt a very distinct pop while laying on the couch. I told my husband and he ran and grabbed some towels. I definitely had a gush as soon as I sat up and then it kept leaking for quite a while. I went through two pairs of pants before even leaving for the hospital!
  • I was fast asleep and I heard a "pop" which woke me up! Maybe I heard it internally? I had a little gush of fluid and then immediately waddled to the bathroom. When I was standing there was hardly any fluid leaking but as I moved around I would get little gushes. I agree with the others that you'd have a never-ending trickle. Who knows about the "in-the-water" scenario though! My contractions started a couple of hours after my water broke.
  • So I read that only about 15% of labors start with water breaking. But it seems like that is actually much more common. Am I crazy or does that seem low?

I don't know.  It is all anecdotal.  I feel like most of the people I talk to say they had to have theirs broken...even with major contractions.  My doctor is convinced that since mine broke with #1, it won't with baby #2.

  • I don't know how it feels for my water to break, my 1st all I had was the mucus plug. A few hours later I had really bad contractions. And at the hospital they popped it so I didn't feel anything honestly. But I remember having to use the bathroom. Now I'm expecting my second baby and I hope this time I can actually have my water break. But this is a nice topic I got to hear tons of experience so if mine breaks I'll have some kind of clue also thanks
