I feel stupid

Hello All,

To start with I don't want to sound like an idiot.....but Tuesday I went to L&D at the request of my Dr because I have horrible migraines that seem to come on with BH or what I thought was just baby moving. The migraines are a concern bc my Dr assumed my BP is getting too high and doesn't want pre-e.

Well, I get there and they hook me up to a machine and my contractions are every 5-7mins. I was there for 4 hours and they did a cervix check. Not dilated but 50% effaced.

They asked how I was doing with them and I said fine. Heck I wouldn't even have come in for the cramping! I was there for my headache! They called the on call dr and she said go home and if it worsens, come back.

I feel like an idiot for not realizing they were contractions. Am I missing something here?

Re: I feel stupid

  • Nope, I had BH that I only was ever aware of if on a monitor. I never felt them. It wasn't until I had more severe cramping that I did feel that actually started to cause dilation. I'm guessing that's why they sent you home since they weren't causing any cervix changes. Enjoy your lack of feeling them!

  • I had a NST last week and my BH contractions were constant and 3 to 4 minutes apart but they didn't hurt so they told me it was no big deal
  • You're not alone - I was in L&D at 32 weeks for some light spotting, and they also saw some contractions. I couldn't even feel what they saw on the monitor. The doctor said it happens ALL the time. It freaked me out that I wasn't feeling anything, and she said that it's really common for FTMs not to feel early contractions or realize what they're feeling are contractions. And she said not to worry - that you wouldn't come in and find out you're 5 cm and 100% effaced without feeling anything. That made me feel better!
  • Your not missing anything. I didn't realize I was having contractions with our first until I was around 5-6cm. Now I'm pregnant with our second and my midwife told me I was having braxton hicks at my appointment and I had no clue.

  • During my first pregnancy, the doctor asked if I'd had any cramping when I was around 36 weeks.  Because I felt like my body was constantly having new discomfort, I didn't realize that the cramping could be contractions.  He did a cervix check and I was at 4cm.  I freaked out thinking...crap I won't know when I'm in labor!  Of course that's ridiculous...I certainly knew when I was in active labor!
