My son is a week old and hasn't pooped in five days. We went to the doctor and she stuck her finger up there and he still has yet to go. I'm really really worried now. Any suggestions???
Wow, that's interesting. Was the dr. Concerned? What is the baby ingesting? Formula or breast milk? If breast, could it be a medication you might be taking?
He could be constipated. My son was only pooping once a week, so we tried a couple different things, but none of them worked. The pediatrician finally recommended prune juice and water. Now, he poops every two days. He has always been formula fed. Did the pediatrician not mention constipation as a possibility?
Sorry, I should've been more clear. My son was about a month old when the pediatrician recommended the prune juice. At a week old, I'm sure your son is too young for that. But we did try a couple other things before then. Maybe ask your pediatrician about constipation?
My mom's best friend is a labor and delivery nurse and she told me that breast milk is so effecient that sometimes there isn't any waste, so no poop for a few days isn't a big concern
My son is now 8 weeks he only poops every 4-7 days. We strictly breastfeed now, in the first few weeks he pooped more but we were supplementing with formula until my milk production got better and the breastfeeding became easier. If your doctor isn't to worried about it don't stress to much. As long as you are getting enough wet diapers.
My mother in law taught me this trick. If your baby is constipated, Put a blob of Vaseline on your finger, and rub it right on the butthole, a tiny bit should even go in (don't shove it in with your finger but it will go in when you rub it across. That will lube things up a little bit and help get things moving along.
