August 2015 Moms

Who all is currently attending college, or planning to after delivery?

I would like to enroll in college in January and continue my education. I am curious as to who is juggling or has juggled the student/mom life and what are some tips or advice for making it through successfully?
Also, if any of you intend on returning to school in the near future as well, what is your game plan?
Full time student? Part time? Work and School? Lay it on me ladies.

  • I am a SAHM and go to school part time. I won't be returning until January though. I've always taken night classes just so I don't have to worry about babysitters and such for the kids. With housework, homework, and studying I definitely keep busy but I've found it to be manageable, you just have to be organized with your time. I plan on slowly working my way through until I have my degree and then I can return to work once the youngest is in school full-time.

  • Im currently going to school for my masters (dove straight in after bachelors with no break). Im signed up for 1 class this fall with a professor ive already had that knows im going to be having a baby right before school starts. He has an 8 week old too so he is understanding of my situation. Throughout the last half of my bachelors when DH and I got together I had a toddler 50% of the time to help raise as well. DH is a huge help and working full time and going to school is rough, but doable. You just have to find the time to get the studies in. While I went full time with my bachelors, I am only going part time with my masters. Helping DSD with homework half the week and pregnancy has been rough. I know adding a newborn to the mix will make it harder, but ive got a routine already I just have to add the babys routine in now. Just remember to do what you can handle, if it takes you a little longer so what, youre still progressing towards your goal.
  • I'm a student!  I've been working on my degree for several years now.  I worked full-time and attended night classes at my local community college for 3 1/2 years to earn my AS in Chemistry.  Then I transferred to Drexel University full time and worked about 30 hours a week for the past year.  I'm on leave of absence right now until classes start up again the end of September.  I have a teenager currently and I'm not sure how this is going to work with an infant on top of it, but, I only have a year left until I earn my BS in Biology so I am going to try hard to juggle it all.  I have already decided that if need be, I would take a bit longer to complete my degree once baby arrives.

I'm not going to lie, it's a struggle juggling work, family, classes, assignments, and maintaining a household.  I typically survive off of about 5 hours of sleep.  My days start off at 5:30 am and end around Midnight if I'm lucky.  It's hard, but, if you are choosing a major that will help you get a job or have a career to provide for your family's future financially, it will be worth it in the end.

If you are young, I highly recommend you work to complete your degree while your kids are young.  I wish I had finished while my oldest was little.  But, I always thought I would have the chance to go back and for years kicked myself for not doing it.  I'm 38 years old now and struggled for years a single working mother before I met my husband.

Ultimately, your work/school/home schedule is dependent on what works for you and your family.  Good luck to you!  Wishing you much success in the endeavor!  You can do it!

I almost started this same topic this morning. I'm concidering going back to school a few months after my baby is born. Just part time, probably evenings or online, seems to be peoples recomendation. but I haven't figured out exactly what I want to do yet. I already have a BA from a university, but honnestly wish I would have thought a little harder about what I wanted to do be for I got it. Don't really like my field... So what is your plan? AA? BA? A specific trade or tech school degree?
  • Hi. I am a ftm and I have a feeling it will be a struggle first , but once I find my Bella's schedule; it will become easier to adjust. I plan on going back to school in January and taking two classes. Good luck ladies.
  • Starting my masters/doctorate in the fall, might wait till spring
  • Due to our place of work shutting down and laying us off, hubby got two years of schooling paid for. He is going for LPN right now (and later on RN). I really wanted to do culinary, but they wouldn't pay for it because it's not "in demand". Boo on them! Hopefully sometime in the future I can go.
  • I'm a FTM and I plan on going back to school fall term full time. I registered for 2 online classes and 1 in person. I can take my daughter with me as long as I baby wear and she isn't disruptive. I know several moms that took their babies with them until they were 10 months old. If that doesn't work out though DH can watch her for that one class. If I stay full time I should be able to graduate in March so I'm really feeling the push. After I graduate I'll look for a part time job and start applying to grad school.
  • I am taking online classes for a tech program (I have a BS and MA, but have wanted this certification for a while). I work 40+ hr weeks and haven't decided when I am going to start my next course load with due date approaching. Husband has been wanting to go back to finish his BA. We have discussed him leaving his job
at the end of September (when I go back to work) so he can care for son and take classes.
  • I am returning to school in January to finish my BSN. I'll only have one semester to go, so I'll graduate in June!!

School and kids is completely doable as long add you are focused and you really want it. I earned ny RN with two little ones, and I WILL finish this degree with a newborn! It's all about your attitude!
  • I plan on going part time just to get back in the game and then stepping it up to full once I know I can handle it. :)

I'm going to go for my MSN. I think I'm done working the floor and ready to go on to become a nurse practitioner. I'm not planning to go back to work after birth ( unless it's like a per diem nursing supervisor type of job on a weekend night) so I'll have time to focus ( my MIL lives next door and my mom is 2 blocks away)

Good for you! ! I didn't even have a job when I was in nursing school and was overwhelmed lol!
  • I was accepted into a nursing program prior to finding out I was pregnant! Baby girl is due August 4th and the program starts August 24th
  • I'm currently in school to be an RN. Baby girl is due the second week of school. School only allows us to miss 5 days so I won't get my full 6 weeks to spend with her. The teachers have said students will have the babies on a Thursday or Friday and are back to school on Monday (for vaginal deliveries of course). Thankfully hubby is so supportive and is willing to do whatever for me to finish and graduate in December. I'm sure it will be hard with a newborn but if you put your mind to it then you can do it!! Don't give up!

Wishing you future nurse preggos lots of luck! Nursing school is extremely competitive and they allow absolutely little to no absenteeism. In mine, you miss 1 clinical make it up. 2nd time, youre out of the program. Hopefully you guys will be ok aND continue on. It really is a awesome career!
  • I was going to start and continue to go starting July 27-December 9. But my advisor and I decided to take the term off. I did this with my first as well. It's great because you are able to establish a pumping routine and a freezer stash, a baby routine, and get adjusted in general by the time you return. I had my dd in October 2012, returned in January 2013, and even though I was still tired often, I managed to keep honors until I graduated in July 2014!
    :)
  • I think it's doable, but it is NOT easy! If you only have 1 child, it's easier...just remember you're the mommy and DH can only pick up so much slack. There will be days when you feel like you've lost your mind, but hang in there...you can do it!
  • I'm currently working on my master's in psychology. It is all online, which is the only way I honestly think I could do it! I currently have A 2 and 4 year old. I work at a school sept-beginning of June. I'm currently taking 10 credits.

    DS1 -6/25/11

    DS2 -3/23/13

    Missed MC D&C 8/26/14

    DD - 8/26/15

    LO#4 due 5/30/17

  • First of all, let me just say how proud I am of all of you! Keep up the great work mommas! And thank all of you so very much for your replies, you are all very encouraging and inspiring =)
After discussing it with DH, the plan is going to go like this: Keep working and study up to retake the ACT before enrollment in the Spring semester. After I get enrolled I will be leaving my job and attending school part-time in the evenings so as not to juggle work/school/DS' s school/DD's childcare/and child care for new LO. I'll be a SAHM and part-time student, DH can watch our Munsters the two evenings a week I'll be attending classes.
DD is mine from a previous marriage, and DS is DH's from a previous marriage and we both have equal joint custody with their other respective parents every other week. So every other week I'll have plenty of study time, and just have to do the absolute best I can on the weeks we have all three.
I'm 25, and I'm just knocking out my basics for now because I don't know what major I want to settle on. There is the "I'm good at this one" option, the "This is my passion" option, and the "I know this one sucks but it pays well" option, so I just need to figure out which direction I'm going to swing with that once I get my toes dipped in and refresh myself on what I'm best at or what I really want to do.
