Anemia

I'm 34 weeks and have iron deficiency anemia with pregnancy. I'm borderline anemic when not pregnant. I had my levels checked and was told today I have to come tomorrow for more blood work. I am currently taking 2 iron supplements a day. Anyone else dealt with severe anemia while pregnant? Wondering what else they do to help increase my iron since 2 supplements is not helping and my levels are dropping.

I don't know if they can do infusions when your pregnant but they will do them when not for severe anemia.

  • Okay, thank you! I read that was a possibility, but didn't know if there were other things that could be done before that was needed.

No idea. I think my levels evened out at the last blood draw since they didn't call me back right away... Are you following the diet to maximize iron absorption?? Take with OJ on a mostly empty stomach and do not take with dairy??
  • I had the same. Twice my levels dropped and now with the third draw its at 11. So thank god it went up. What I do to take myiron is to take them on a complete and empty stomach. So I drink one at 12 midnight and the other in the early morning, go back to sleep for 2-3 hrs, then eat breakfast. So far that has helped me since those are the only times that my stomach is completely empty. I also drink it with orange juice, just a few oz.
If it wasn't rising my doc would have done infusion threw the vains. She warned me.
  • I've been told I can have an infusion if my iron doesn't go up, so they should be able to do that for you. Friends who've had it done during pregnancy report feeling significantly better afterwards, might be worth asking about.
