Curious..

I know a lot of people say that there water never broke or doctors do it in the hospital but for the women who's water have broken outside of the hospital...I've read in a couple pass discussions on here that your water breaking feels similar to the feeling you have when you have to pee.

Would you know for sure between that "having to pee feeling" and your water breaking ?

Like can you hold it like you can pee or it kinda just comes out all of a sudden??

Re: Curious..

  • Probably would have been easier to go to the discussion(s) you were reading to ask that question to the person/people who described the feeling. Personally my water didn't break it was broken so I can't answer the question.

It's a really old discussion and its no where to be found . So that's the reason I started a new one and its only about my question not about other things I don't care to get answers on...water breaking was just brought up somewhat.
  • My friend got a really sharp pain like no pain she ever felt and her water broke after that and with every contraction more squished out
  • I had a gradual break. It was a little more than a normal gush of discharge. I felt no discomfort with it. It was kind of a pinkish color which tipped me off to the fact that it was breaking.

  • Mine felt like a balloon popped in. My belly (up near my belly button). It hurt a bit but not crazy. I was lying down then when I stood up the water came out.

I woke up to a "Pop" and it all started pouring out. Would not stop until I delivered. If I was standing, it was a steady stream -- I had to go to L&D with a towel between my legs bc a pad wouldn't have covered it. It did not feel like I had to pee, nor was it in any way close to the amount I would pee. Everyone is different though, but for me -- you would definitely know whether it was pee or fluid.

Here's a fun fact too -- i think the average amount of amniotic fluid (aka "water") at this point in the third trimester is four cups. So if you have four cups (or a quart, or 800 ml-ish) leaking out of you with no way to control it or stop it, then chances are it's your water. A normal, non-preggo bladder can hold *maybe* two cups of liquid, and I would bet on our case it's closer to one. Thats a noticable difference! (Again, my water amount seriously seemed to be more, but again, everyone is different and that's just an average.)
  • I heard/felt a pop.

  • I cant explain it better than the pp but some how it felt different and every time i shiffted more came out.
  • I think the big way to know the difference is that when you move, even like tilting your pelvis slightly, water just trickles out. It is like a water balloon with a small hole that if you jostle it, water will come out except between your legs.
As someone else said, sometimes you can have a really slow trickle that's harder to diagnose which is why bump ladies are always saying to call your dr purely because there are strips that turn pink if it's amniotic fluid. The pop and gush (which I had) is pretty unmistakeable. Mine wasn't painful or uncomfortable.

For me, my water exploded everywhere so it was very hard to NOT know what that was. I heard a pop and liquid was everywhere.

    Doesn't happen for everyone though.

  • I felt a pop, like a water balloon was in my belly, and it gushed out....and just kept coming. It was much more than I had pictured.
  • Mine was a gush all at once. I think the water balloon comparison is probably the best one out there.
I've heard that some do have a slow trickle that can resemble a leaky bladder. But I have no experience with this personally.

  • My water broke at the hospital while I was puking. All I head was a pop and felt the water gushing out. You have no control over.
