What pacifier does your breastfed baby take/like??

Hi Mommies! I am lurking over from the November Birth Month group. I am a FTM and have plans to breastfeed. Baby will be 90% fed by mommy's boob but may occasionally take a bottle. I am trying to see what the most recommended pacifier for breastfed babies are. Obviously, I know that some babies are picky and will choose for themselves which type of paci they take, if they even want one at all. Thank you all for your help and looking forward to becoming an active member of the Breastfeeding group real soon!! ;)

ETA: If your baby never took one at all, I would be interested to know!!

Re: What pacifier does your breastfed baby take/like??

  • From what the nurse at the hospital and LC told us it's about the shape, use one that is as close to the real thing. The Nuk (I think) turn upward which is nothing like a real nipple and so that's no good!
  • Your poll is nursing one option... None!

My bub won't take a pacifier or bottle, so all your planning might be for naught. If you have a registry, maybe put a couple different brands on the registry to experiment with.

Fwiw, the only nope my bub had ever latched onto other than mine was a tommee tipped, but your babe could have a totally different preference.

I'm sure you know this, but try to avoid giving a pacifier at first. In the early weeks just let your baby comfort nurse at the breast, it will help to get your milk supply off to a good start.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies and @longliveregina, you are right! I can't believe I forgot because in my mind while making it, I wanted to see how many BF'ing moms didn't use a pacifier at all!

  • My LO only takes the Gumdrop brand. It was also what my lactation consultant recommended. I've found its more about what your LO likes over what you want to give them though. I have like 7 different kinds and she will only take the one. She just gags on the others.
  • DS will only take the boob as a paci.

  • Yea mine doesn't even act like he knows what a paci is . And hasn't taken a bottle in months ! It's a little frustrating when we are out and about and the only thing I can do is excuse myself to my car to feed/comfort nurse him .
  • My DS likes the MAM and gumdrop. Have a few options to see what works!

  • My son refuses to use a pacifier (or drink from a bottle) I have tried 4 different kinds!
  • My daughter would only use MAM but she wanted the bigger size like a six month but it was too long. She was confusing lol. She ended up only taking it for about three months and even then it wasn't often
  • Soothie is by far her favorite. Sometimes she'll take MAM but at least for my LO- she hates munchkin latch. Spits it out immediately

  • Thank you all for the responses! I've gathered that I should have a few on hand to test on baby and in the end, baby may choose not to take one at all. I appreciate the responses as I am a FTM.

  • We use a wub-a-nub giraffe which is the soothie pacifier. He loves it and loved being able to hold the giraffe as a part of his self soothing behavior
  • Totally different for every baby, trial and error.
DS1 only took MAMs. DS2 didn't take anything. DD will only take a NUK pacifier. We tried many different ones and that's the only brand that she wouldn't spit out.
  • My son would not take a bottle or pacifier.

I am a SAHM and plan to exclusively BF my little one. I worry she might not want to take a bottle when the time comes that I ever have to leave her with my in-laws or parents long enough that I won't be there for a feeding. To tag onto my own post, has anyone ever been in this situation? How did you transition your LO to occasionally taking a bottle? I know there are bottles that are supposed to mimic the breast.

  • We use the Jollypop pacifier - mine is 4 months old and last night for the first time we put her in her cot awake and with a pacifier. She was fully fed and clean and she fell straight to sleep. Up until a week ago she had no interest whatsoever in a paci at all. As far as bottle feeding goes, we use the Mimijumi bottle, and so far I personally haven't given her one. Either my husband or one of our sisters has done so. I haven't left her for longer than a couple of hours so have never needed to worry too much, but she takes the Mimijumi and I'm hoping to transition straight to a sippy cup once she's on solids, keeping BF at night time.
