November 2015 Moms

So Big at 19 weeks already. Ack. Weight gain?

i am 5'3 And pregnant with # 2. Originally I was pregnant with #1 at 36 and weighed 145 pre pregnancy. Then I gained 55lbs with that one yikes. Didn't work out and ate whatever and whenever I wanted.

Took three years to get back to 150 because let's face it it's exhausting to think about exercise when you work full time doctorate program full time and have an infant full time.

Now I am 40 and pregnant with #2. I had already gained back to 165 pre pregnancy due to holiday weight gain ugh. And now I am 19 weeks and weigh 175. So a 10 lb. gain but jeez my tummy is super preggers!! They say it does look bigger faster with #2.

Still. I am looking for a way to slow the weight gain. Want to keep it to 20-25lbs Max and I'm due November 8-16ish.

Also I am not an active person. I very lazy but have been spin weight and strength training periodically. And I know. I should go for walks but they are soooo boring. :P

Am I the only person who just does not feel like moving in this heat and with being half way through pregnancy and being so old arse lol!

  • I don't feel like moving either! And I'm still feeling nausea some days as well.

One thing I would say it a lot of it is probably your organs moving up. Mine shifted so early this time that my upper stomach looks huge some days.
The humidity has not been helping either. I feel puffy.

I think your body is going to do what it needs to do so go easy on yourself.

Maybe try swimming? I took prenatal water aerobics last time and loved it. I'm trying to find a class that fits my schedule now because it really helped me feel better last time.

  • There is a gym at my work with PTs and they create PEPs at no extra cost for employees. I do like to run, just not during pregnancy. I have a program that involves the inflatable ball thing(I'm sure there's a name for it, but I just can't think of it right now). I lean on it against the wall and do squats. I do leg extensions, leg press, and sit on the ball thing and work with a band doing rows, presses and curls. Then I walk on the treadmill. I do thi=s all on my lunch break, so there's no added time in my day.

When I'm home, I'm pretty active with DD. My schedule doesn't allow us to go for morning/evening walks though. Have you tried walking with your LO in the evenings or mornings? Maybe take your LO to the park, zoo, aquarium or just play in your own yard. Even if it's minimal, activity is good.

Also, try eating a gestational diabetes diet(even if you don't have it). When I was diagnosed with it last pregnancy, I lost 10 lbs in 4 weeks and ended up only gaining around 40ish. The GD diet is pretty healthy for you and I'm sure your OB wouldn't mind giving you some resources.

    Hope this helps!

  • I'm not an active person either when it's hot outside, especially while pregnant. I gained a little under 60lbs with DS1 and almost 20 of that was by 20 weeks, I'm at 18 weeks now and so far I'm only at 2. During the week I'm a SAHM so we really don't venture out much, but on the weekends we're generally at the beach, aquarium, disney world a few weeks ago, etc. I think the busy, full of walking weekends have helped slow my roll this time. I'm far more motivated to walk around if it involves taking DS somewhere fun for the day, maybe look up some indoor play places or festivals.
  • Eh like anything I really think it's about diet. In Emily Oster's book Expecting Better she shares the statistic that women who exercised only gained one less pound than those who didn't during pregnancy! Talk about a buzzkill.

I know I gain and lose based on nutrition. Don't eat the giant pizza from dominos, try to get an organic flatbread from the grocery store and make your own or get a frozen flatbread pizza that'll cost you 600 calories instead of over 1000. I eat veggie burgers and bake my own French fries. Little changes in your calorie consumption will likely make a bigger difference than the 200 calories you'll burn working out. :)

My husband has been grilling little potato cubes! They are amazing. He cuts up a potato and puts seasoning on them and grills me a chicken breast. I could eat that every night for dinner.

I was very active last pregnant until I got put on bedrest at 35 weeks. I gained 70lbs but 40 was gone in a week... It was mostly water.
  • @Pontot31 I lost 30 before I even left the hospital. Water, baby and blood.
They don't tell you how much blood is going to come out. Lol. I had IVs twice a week for 6 weeks as part of trying to stop preterm labor, I felt like my insides were swimming.
  • I highly suggest cutting carbs if you want to curb the pregno weight gain. Had gestational diabetes with #3 and was just diagnosed early this time. Not being able to eat carbs really kept me from gaining too much weight with #3. I had a 9 lb. 8 oz. baby and gained 35 lbs. Gained that much in the first 28 weeks before being diganosed and not a lb. after. So, without changing my diet who knows how much I would have gained.
  • To OP I feel the same way, but as stated by a PP I think it's because my organs shifted so much sooner. Don't let the numbers on the scale discourage you from staying active, even just walks, swims, and other low impact stuff. Even if it doesn't keep the pounds off your body will thank you for it. The low carb thing is a good idea also, even if you're not looking at GD. Don't be too hard on yourself though!
