Baby Names

Names almost decided, need a little help!

We get to find out the sex this Saturday and we'd like for our names to be decided by then.

Our boy name: Carter Paul Johnson... I'm not sure about Paul(it's a family name) any suggestions for the middle name?

Our girl name is narrowed down to:
Madison Kay Johnson
Madelyn Kay
Avery Kay

Kay is a family name that we want to stick with.

We have two girls already (Eva & Ila)

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!!

  • @gonetothesea I like Madeline, thank you. :)

  • Carter Paul is nice.

Honestly I find Avery and any Maddie name very trendy and likely in 5-10 years totally dated like Ashley and Jennifer were in the 80's.  The PP suggestion of Madeline is better I agree because it's the classic version of the Maddie names.  Or suggesting Mallory

  • Not a fan of Carter but it's not terrible. I don't feel it's as classic as your other children's names and would seem the odd one out in the sib set.

    Suggest...
    Corbin
    Calvin
    Cameron
    Charles (nn Charlie)
    Chandler
    Christopher or Christian
    Clark
    Clayton
    Cyrus

Paul is a wonderful classic name and if it has family meaning then I think it's a great choice. FWIW, Paul is also a family name for my husband and it's his #1 choice for an honor name to use in the middle name spot, if we have a boy. I wasn't crazy about it at first but I've grown to really love it. If a name has family meaning that is all that really matters.

As far as your girl names go... I'm not a fan of any.

Your other daughters names are Eva and Ila (is that like Isla?) which leads me to cross Avery off the list right off the bat. IMO, Avery is too similar in sound to Eva, not to mention it is a masculine name.

Speaking of masculine names... Madison is also masculine. I really don't understand the appeal of this name for a girl. Your other girls have feminine names, I would implore you to choose another lovely feminine name to go with them.

Madelyn is probably your best bet, although I prefer the traditional spelling of Madeline. If you're worried about pronunciation I would remind you that Madeline is the original spelling and has the same pronunciation as the variant spelling of Madelyn. Although it does have alternate pronunciations of Mad-e-Lien, Mad-e-Leen, or Mad-Leen... you need only establish which pronunciation you prefer.

  • Your 2 girls have such lovely feminine names! Please don't saddle the third one with a masculine name! I agree with @brita722 that the traditional spelling of Madeline is the way to go here.

As for Carter, surnames aren't my style, but it's fine. I'd for sure go with Paul or another classic name here to balance out. Paul is a solid choice though.

  • I'm loving these suggestions! Audrey was my initial first choice but DH doesn't seem ecstatic about it. I love Cora, such a precious name! Esme Kay would be very pretty too!
  • I love Carter Paul. I'd choose Madeline out of your choices, but second suggestions of Mallory or Cora. Such lovely names. You might also like Nora or Julia.
  • Eva and Ila are lovely. Avery is no good. I like the suggestion of Madeline. Carter is nms, but I love Paul.

  • I'm a high school teacher and have a TON of Madison/Madeline/Maddies in my classes. Not sure how they've held up lately, but I'd worry about them being a dated trend.
  • @leighann1 Thank you for the heads up! I definitely don't want my LO to have a ton of other girls with her name. I had that happen to me growing up, it got really old!
  • Would Cora Kay be overkill? It doesn't seem to flow well.

Yeah, I think it's a little much. Too much K sounds going on. I liked Esme Kay from earlier, though! Such a beautiful underused name.

Have you considered Angela Kay? It's a good combo-lived with it my whole life :-)

I agree with pp that Madison and Avery aren't as good as your other daughters' names. Also on spelling of Madeline.
