Re: So what do you do? Career Moms (and FTM questions about maternity leave)

  • I get 12 weeks unpaid but ill have some vaca time that ill take. I really dont want to go back to work after the baby, but I make more money then my husband. He says we will see how well we can manage with just his check.
  • I'm also an RN in Canada and I plan to take the entire year and maybe even more. I'm hoping to work mainly evenings (1500-2315) when I go back so we only need childcare for a few hours

  • I'm a Senior Consultant at an international jewelry company. I live in Denmark (Nordic country, in Europe) and will be taking 9 months maternity leave followed by the father taking 3 months. I think I will receive 100% wages the first 6 months leave and I/he will receive 80% during the remaining 6 months leave.

I plan to go back to work and work full time as does the father.
  • I do technical writing and reporting for the research and development wing of an aerospace corporation.  I typically work around 50 hours a week.  It is a contract position.  The company shuts down for three weeks in December and January so I will be taking around 9 weeks all unpaid.  I may talk to my bosses to see if I can come in for one day during December in order to be eligible for my yearly bonus.  (The company I work for requires at least one paycheck in each month to be eligible for a bonus.)

  • I am a FTM and work in IT for a hospital system. I'm planning on taking 12 weeks all fully paid. They offer Short Term disability in which I can get paid at 100% for however many years I have been with the company (8 years in September) then the other 4 weeks I have PTO saved up. I do believe my boss may let me work from home initially after those 12 weeks are up. He currently lets me work from home 1-2 days a week right now and is wanting to up that more the closer to my due date. I'm planning on working right up until we are heading to hospital.

I work in hospitality.  I'm hourly right now (hoping for a promotion), and the only coverage I have is FMLA.  If I remember correctly, it's six weeks, but I must exhaust my vacation at the start of that time and the rest is unpaid.
  • Right now I'm working as a Pharmacy Technician. Taking a medical leave for 8 weeks since I'm going to be having a scheduled c section. Since I have a degree in laboratory medicine I'll probably go back to that after though.
  • I am a Cost Accounting Manager and I will be taking 12 weeks.  That is the most I can take with our policy.  I get paid 100% of my pay for 7 weeks and 67% of my pay for the remaining 5 weeks.  So the LO will start childcare at 12 weeks, which isn't too terrible.
  • Wow, I am envious of some of you ladies, your companies are awesome!

I work for an Agency within the Federal Government as a Financial Management Specialist.

I will work as far as I can up to the due date and I should have about 6 weeks of combined annual/sick leave saved up I can use. Hopefully, at that point it will be after the first of the year and I will advance 2 weeks of sick/annual leave. Then I will work from home 3 days a week for about 2 more weeks. Luckily, my mother has been employed by another Federal Agency for many years and has tons of leave saved up. She is able to donate her leave to me if I need more. Planning to be out of work for no more than 12 weeks.

I'll likely take 12 weeks. I have to use most of my vacation days to use FMLA. I will get paid for those (a week or two) ,then the rest unpaid.
  • I get a pang of sadness whenever I see posts like this.  I miss working!  I was an accountant but got laid off while I was pregnant with my daughter thanks to my office closing.  I worked for a big company and their maternity benefits were great.  16 weeks off with full pay.

  • I am a Costume Designer for TV/Film. Not eligible for FMLA nor are we offered paid leave. I will hopefully work up until I go into labor. Then take the Thanksgiving week as maternity leave. I plan to work from home for another 2 weeks after that before coming back full time. In my industry we don't get sick, vacation or personal days paid so I would like to lose as little work as possible.

On the upside I head my department and have a team of capable assistants who can do a lot for me while I'm out. As the boss I can also come and go as I please as long as the job gets done.

What an interesting job.  Have you worked on anything that we may have seen?

  • I am a construction worker in the military so I will get 6 weeks of leave then it's back to work for me but thankfully I won't deploy for a year after baby is born
  • Veterinary technician. I can take up to 12 weeks but only 4 paid. I will probably take 6 weeks.
  • Insurance Underwriter.  I'll be taking the 6-8 with none paid.  Needless to say we are saving up now while we can.

  • I'm an event manager for a liquor company. I plan to use any vacation/sick time first and use that up then I can take up to 12 weeks with 60% of my pay. I will most likely only take a total of 10 weeks including personal time. Luckily I work from home about 60-70% of the time which should make the transition back to work a bit easier.

Hi! I work in the Human Reousrce office of my manufacturing company. I am responsible for handling applications, selecting which applicants I want to bring in for an interview, doing the interviews, and conducting new employee orientation -along with all the government paperwork associated with a new hire.

I am due 11/15 so if we have the baby on my due date (wishful thinking) I will take 7 weeks off which would bring me back to work just after New Years. I am allowed 12 weeks of umpire leave with fmla. I also can get 6 weeks of short term disability and that gives me 60% of my paycheck. So I will take the 6 weeks of STD plus a week unpaid for a total of 7 weeks, roughly. It al depends when baby comes!
  • I work for a local "community bank" as an office manager and fortunately due to being salaried I will be taking 12 weeks at 100% pay all covered by my employers FMLA & STD plan.
  • I work at a hospital as an administrative assistant.  our STD has a 45 day elimination period so you can't use it for a regular pregnancy.  I've been saving PTO since we found out about our unplanned pregnancy - I'm going to try to take 10 weeks, 8 paid 2 unpaid
  • It is unreal how ridiculous maternity leave is in the US. I researched and found that we are the second worst, only beating Papa New Guinea (which I'm sure is a third-world country). Why don't we place more value on families, on motherhood, hell on healing a sore vagina! I don't care for a lot of talk-what can we do about it?

Well, the first thing to do is to talk about it.  Not bitch, moan or whine, but discuss the pros and cons of offering paid or extended maternity leave.  Do not react defensively or get upset, because then you appear irrational and are thus easily dismissed. (Women and their hormones.  Thank God they're not in charge, they'd send us to war once a month! Hahaha)  Research the topic and find out what talking points are used against it by businesses then find data to refute those points.  Discuss this with your co-workers, bosses, friends, family, mother's groups, church members, local elected officials, etc.  Connect with groups already fighting this fight and see what they need help doing.  Write to your congressmen and women.  Run for elected office yourself.  There are a ton of things we can do, but unless we're willing to have the discussion and have it often nothing else will matter.

  • I'm a teacher in NYC. My maternity leave is only covered by how many sick days I've built up plus I'm allowed to borrow up to 20 more sick days. I've only been at my current job three years, so I have about 4 1/2 weeks of sick time built up. I'll borrow 12 or so to make it to 8 weeks and then take 2 weeks unpaid to get me to 10 weeks. I'm due in November, though, so 2 days for Thanksgiving and 7 days for Christmas break will be included in that. Then I'll have to go back to work. I'll be covered by my insurance the entire time, though.

If you watch prime time television I design the costumes for one of the most popular crime dramas. I've been doing this a long time, so if you can think of a celebrity, I've probably seen them in their underwear. lol.

  • I work a desk job for a large electrical distribution company.  I am really wanting to make it 12 weeks with FMLA, but I think 6 weeks is only 60% of my pay 6 weeks unpaid.  I am doing my best to save 3 weeks of vacation time to hopefully only have 3 weeks of unpaid time off with the baby.  Depending on our finances by then, I may go back early at 10 weeks.  Already trying to negotiate working from home 2 days a week... one day with the baby and one day with the baby with a nanny.

We'll see! :)  Good luck ladies!  I am a FTM and I am already freaking out over it.  I make more than my husband though, so there is no way we could afford for me to stay home.

  • I'm an attorney for the county, and am taking 12 weeks FMLA. I'm going to use my accrued sick/vacation time, so 5 weeks will be paid, and then 6 more weeks will be 1/2 pay (using short term disability). The nice thing is, I'll be returning right around my anniversary date, which is when I'll get more vacation and sick days, so I won't be completely screwed if something comes up!

  • I'm a biomedical engineering PhD student.
I'm fortunate in that my advisor is letting me take my entire Christmas break off without working (I'm working under a graduate research assistantship), and I will still receive my stipend. Christmas break starts the second week of December at my school and goes through the second week of January.
I will stay home with baby after he/she is born (Nov 15 is my DD), then I will go back to school the first week of December to take my final exams, and then I won't go back to school for a little over a month (5-6 weeks).
  • I'm a teacher. I'm due the Saturday before Thanksgiving. I plan on going back January 4th which is when the school opens back up after Christmas/new year. This is all assuming I deliver on or before my due date.
  • I'm a Regional Director for a national skincare distribution company in Canada. I will be taking my one year maternity leave which all be 55 percent of my regular pay. I do feel lucky with our Canadian government but it's so amazing reading the way things work in many very progressive places n Europe where family is certainly a society priority! The long term benefits for everyone as well as companies from employees with job security, the ability to financially handle having children and lower stress levels for children, husband and wives should not be under estimated in my opinion.
