Trace protein and glucose in urine

Just had my doctor appointment at 15w6days, heard the heartbeat, nothing out of the ordinary. I just got back the test results though from the urine sample and it had trace amounts of protein and 100mg/dl of glucose. I'm concerned. Anyone else had this happen? I have diabetes in my family so I took the 3 hr glucose test early (a couple weeks ago) and passed on all 4 blood draws.

Re: Trace protein and glucose in urine

  • How far along are you?  My understanding of the glucose test is that you can develop diabetes more easily later in pregnancy.  I also have a history of Type 1, 2 and Gestational Diabetes in my family.

  • I'm lurking, but I dump glucose in my urine and I have since I was about 18 weeks. I'm 31 weeks now and passed all my glucose tests with flying colors, so no diabetes. My OB said some women just pass sugar. I'm passing A TON at every visit and they have never been concerned.

The protein is more worrisome I think since it indicates ketones which are a strong indicator of diabetes.  At least that's my understanding of the pee strips my sister occasionally had to use.  My little sister had type 1 diabetes so I grew up around the disease as well as having gestational with my first.

Protein is actually an indicator of possible preeclampsia as well. Your doctor may have you do a 24 hour urine catch to evaluate how much you are leaking in a day. I had to do two when I was pregnant because of protein traces and elevated BPs.

ETA: You are really early for a preeclampsia diagnosis, but they may just monitor you more closely. :) Wasn't trying to be the scaremonger.

    This exactly
  • Yes, I totally forgot to mention that part! They will keep an eye on the protein, especially if it keeps happening. Pre-e they are a little iffy to diagnose. You have to meet all the requirements, I believe. My dad died during this pregnancy when I was about 25 weeks and my blood pressure skyrocketed for a while. I was super worried about pre-e and they said high BP alone or protein alone isn't enough to diagnose it. You have to be physically symptomatic (the typical swelling, that kinda thing) as well as have those other two markers in order for them to consider it. But try to relax. You're in good hands! Your doctors will keep a close eye on anything they think is fishy. And like PP said, it could be an indicator of things like pre-e or GD but it could be nothing at all. Hang tight though! All the stress from worrying won't do any good either. Regardless of what they decide to do or not do, the health of you and baby will always be top priority for them.
  • I don't know about glucose levels but I had trace amounts of protein in my urine during my last pregnancy. My OB said trace levels are considered normal.

  • Thanks for your responses! Haven't heard anything from my doc yet so I'll stay positive. I do have glucose readings that are always the high end of "normal" but they have been consistent for years. I do not have high blood pressure- yesterday it was 102/74. Hopefully nothing more comes of it. I just want normal lab results!
