Placenta at 13 weeks

Hi guys,

Don't know if anyone can help but a comment by the sonographer at my 13 week scan is driving me to distraction!

Basically at 13 weeks my little one was jumping around all over the place and overall looked pretty happy and healthy, however the sonographer made a comment about the fact that the placenta was not fully formed and the baby was still using the yolk sac.

This concerned me because I was under the impression that the placenta should be fully formed and in use by 12 weeks.....yet at 13 weeks it wasnt the case for me.

On doing some research most places say 12 weeks but 1 or 2 say around 13-14 weeks.

Does any one have any further info on this or have had a scan at 12/13 weeks which showed the placenta still developing? I am now terrified that something is wrong!

I would ask your doctor. They know more and can put your mind at ease.

I did ask the doctor at the time but I am now under a high risk clinician who has very busy clinics and she barely knew who I was or why I was there. She passed it off as a silly comment by the sonographer and said 13/14 weeks was normal however I have done research and only found one medial journal which said 13/14 weeks everything else is saying 12. I just feel passed off by my health care providers

I would tell them that then. The doctor was probably right though.

If your doctor said it was normal, then you should stop worrying. If you don't feel like your dr is giving you proper attention, find a new one if possible. Also your regular obgyn is still there even if you're under a high risk Drs care, so call and ask them for a second opinion if you're concerned.

Regardless, some doctor will review your ultrasound results and if there was a concern they'd call you for a follow up. So again I wouldn't worry.
