I had an epidural. Contractions are 1 million times more painful than getting an epidural. All I felt was pressure and a prick, like if you grabbed a thumbtack.

It didn't hurt compared to the contractions, but I had a shock go down my leg and it jumped involuntarily. I had two that didn't take (and I was on pitocin so it was extra bad). Honestly sitting on the edge of the bed with pressure and contractions and being still was the worst part.

Also know not every one will take. I had two fail and had a non medicated labour not by choice

I was in hospital 3 nights (cs) and didn't have a BM until a few days later. I think they want you to pass gas but no one asked me.

I've heard that, but I know people who left who did not have a BM. I was a rare unicorn & had a BM the day after. It was scarier than giving birth. Colace is your friend. Buy it now.

Yea, first BM is scary. Be prepared. Stool softeners and hot tea and things like that. But it will be awful.

  • Peri bottle, your best friend ever. After birth SMELLS. Umbilical chord stump, smells like after birth and STINKS. :-&

I had an epidural with my first and my recovery was long and painful. No epidural with my second even though I was pit induced with pre e, recovery was soooo much better. A lot less swelling and bounced back much more quickly.

I'm going to disagree with this. Yes, the epidural hurts, and as @Everycol0r says, if you are already in labor/feeling contractions, than it won't be any worse than what you are already going through, however if you are going in for a scheduled c-section then it really hurts because you don't have the other pain going on, but not for too long. I didn't expect it to hurt since it didn't the first time, but realized that was just because the first time contractions were happening. The second time we had to get baby out before labor started, so it was just straight shit in my back. Didn't help that it took 4 attempts for them to get the IV in my hand before that.

  • What position did you give birth in? Just laying down in a hospital bed or another way? I read about water births in various positions as well as birthing balls and am curious whether they help 'open up the birthing canal' as claimed.

I've been wondering about this since my next will be scheduled! Two epis and a spinal was no biggie in labour but I know it will be different if I'm not next time!

I have definitely heard that epidural experiences vary by each delivery.

I was on my back. If you're interested, you can check out The Bradley Method. It has some good, alternative birthing styles.

  • @kpalt It's like a bad contraction. Since you aren't having any others, though, it does hurt. Luckily it passes fairly quickly. They check you periodically afterwards to see how far up its working by poking you with a little needle up your stomach and your sides to see if you feel it, too. That was weird.
