"Postpartum Preparedness" AMA (trigger & tmi warnings)

Alright folks, this topic is a no holds, free for all Ask Me Anything on all things Postpartum. I know there are some other mom's on the board so this is not just for me to chime in, but for them as well! It's one thing to google or read about things but it's quite another to get answers 1st hand from those who have made the journey through pregnancy, child birth & recover.

Also, this is not just limited to postpartum, you can ask about pregnancy related things & labor. (I do not know if your symptoms mean you are KTFU so don't ask.)

I said so many times after I was pregnant, gave birth & recovering: "Why didn't anyone tell me about this or that?!" Now's the time to let your curious minds wander & ask!

Please keep in mind that my experience has no bearing on yours. This thread has a general TMI & ick warning so read at your own risk.

Re: "Postpartum Preparedness" AMA (trigger & tmi warnings)

  • Do you really poop on the table while giving birth? Because that's seriously one of my biggest worries...

I don't know! My doctor told me when I was in the stirrups not to worry, she had been pooped & peed on. I asked DH a few months after DD was born and he said he never noticed if I did. So I'm going with no.

Did you have anyone other than DH in the room or even at the hospital? I mentioned to DH I wanted to call everyone if any future baby is born and not have people giving me anxiety waiting and texting.

DH was only in the room once I began pushing. During labor I had family come back in pairs to visit. It was nice because it can get boring otherwise. However, I delivered late & everyone who had waited at the hospital for 15 hours didn't get to see the baby until the next day. They were pissed. I didn't care, I was to tired.

Did you naturally tear or did you have to be cut?

I tore naturally. My doctor massaged my perineum during pushing, which helped. But I delivered via forceps. I only had a 2nd degree tear & it was surprising by all that it was only that bad and not a 4th degree tear. Yes, it absolutely still bothers me during sex.

Edit: I read naturally tearing heals better than being cut so that's what I wanted.

Can you elaborate more on these degrees of tears? This is news to me
I'm familiar with the tears but am shocked to hear it still bothers you!

This one you may have to google, but 4th degree is the worst and I believe it's a tear from the vagina all the way to the anus. But there are definitely different degrees of tearing & recovery!

Edit: I think a 1st degree tear doesn't require any stitches or maybe just 1.

Different sexual positions make it worse. I've asked my OB to check it a few times and she said it healed fine.

  • This is perhaps a silly question but did you have to change your sleeping position during pregnancy- I assume at some point you can no longer sleep on your side or stomach? I'm just worried because I find it impossible to sleep flat on my back?

Not silly at all. It is not recommended to sleep on your back once you're pregnant because the weight of the baby/placenta can put pressure on your vena cava. It's a main artery & can cut off blood supply. It is recommended to sleep on your left side. At some point it's just really too uncomfortable to back sleep anyways because you can't breath! DD is 18 months & I still cannot back or tummy sleep comfortably anymore. I was never a side sleeper before.

What PPs already said, side is best left especially. I was already a side sleeper and it's still an adjustment sleeping. It's very hard to get comfortable once you start getting bigger

I had my good friend in the labor room until I decided to get an epideral. My IL & my Dad were in the waiting room when I had DS.

I only had H with me for my birth with my daughter. (My first). If I had it my way I'd wait until afterward for everyone to come. DS took longer than expected so my IL showed up despite my requests that they not. :-m

That's called Lochia & can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy. I recommend Always Infinity pads. Light and super absorbent! Life saver even during pregnancy when you are sweating & leaking God knows what down there. My postpartum bleed lasted 5-6 weeks, was a variety of colors from red, yellow & green. It smelled awful but wasn't to much worse than a really long damn period.

I think it's pretty common to tear, episiotomies have grown less common than prior generations.

Yes, until he went back to work (he only got 1 week off). Then I did most of the work. There were times DH was lucky to be alive though as I stared at him slumbering peacefully as I held a NB with reflux all night.

    Ugh.

Yes and sometimes it's just out of nowhere, or if it's past a feeding time. I always had letdown in the other breast while starting a feed. It doesn't last forever though, just as your body is adjusting to how much your baby needs. Breast pads are your friend!
