Safe to run?

I'm into running & I do high intensity spin classes. Just recently with all the fatigue I've only been running between 3-6 miles at a time. The spin classes I attend are very intense. My husband is worried that I may be harming the baby. I know they say if you did it before your BFP then you should be fine but I'm
just curious on y'all's take. Thanks!

Re: Safe to run?

  • I am an avid runner and ran throughout my first pregnancy, your body will let you know when you go too far. My OB said you can continue the same active as you did beforehand. Keep working out the end results after you have a baby are much better

Mine also had no problem with me continuing to run.  Though, the fatigue hit so hard my first pregnancy that I gave it up in favor of walks very early.  Still running now, will continue as long as my body is happy with it.  I have been taking care to make sure that I slow down from my regular pace so I don't overheat, and will probably be doing more treadmill runs earlier in the summer than I normally do, just to be safe.

    IUD removed 2/13/14
BFP #1 5/23/14, blighted ovum discovered at 7 wks, Cytotec for missed miscarriage at 8 wks 6/26/14
BFP #2 4/30/15, heartbeat gone at 8 wks, missed miscarriage again, Cytotec didn't work, D&C 6/12/15
Biopsy discovered was a partial molar pregnancy, on BC for 6 month wait and test

  • If your body is used to running it seems like it would be ok to keep that up. Personally though, the spinning seems a little iffy. You burn so many calories and lose so much water during the class I would just be worried about dehydration. Maybe you can take up yoga or something instead during your pregnancy to keep tone.

  • Thank you ladies! I guess I'm a little hesitant because I don't have my first appointment until May 29th & I have a race the weekend before. It's only a 5K but still. Thanks for the input!
  • Running is completely fine to keep up. I went on with normal training until 34 weeks in my second pregnancy. I'm down to 3-5mi now because of fatigue but keeping your regular activity level is totally normal.

  • Yes I'm so tired lately that it's even hard to get motivated to go. I went the other day to just ride the bike & I had no idea I was in there before a class was going to start so I ended up staying & I felt fine. I guess I just need to know my limitations. I'm definitely not going to be doing any PR's during my pregnancy! Lol
  • Lol yes no PR's in pregnancy!!

  • I'm also a runner - my doctor said with any exercise not to let my heart rate get above 140 and not to be so out of breath that i can't carry on a normal conversation.
  • Update: went to spin tonight. Felt great. Did not push myself like I normally would.
  • I think running is perfectly fine.  I ran two half marathons while pregnant with DD (at 3 months and 5 months).  While running gets harder the further along you get (baby pushing into your rib cage - less room to breath) most doctors will clear you to run through your entire pregnancy pending if there are any complications.  Just listen to your body.
