Elevated Risk for Down Syndrome After Blood Screening

I got a call from my doctor last week that, after my second round of bloodwork, our risk for Down syndrome came back at 1:170. My NT scan was normal and no other indicators have been pointed out to us prior to this. I have an appt Thursday with a genetics counselor and a specialist for further testing. My husband and I have decided we won't do amnio, so I am hoping this specialist offers NIPT. Has anyone had a similar experience in the past? What was your result? Can't help but to be worried. 1:170 is still low odds, but it's hard not to stress/think about it.

  • I didn't have that testing the first time around, but my son does have down syndrome if you ever have questions. If other things seem negative, then it might just be a weird elevation. Maybe ask them to double check at your anatomy scan for signs also? I know with my son they didn't see anything to point to it, but I also didn't have blood screenings, I just had ultrasounds.

Sorry to not be of much help, but if you have questions, let me know :)

  • Thank you! We will love him the same no matter what; it was just unexpected as neither of us have family history of it and everything has been normal until now. I've done some research on the blood screenings (think they're called quad screens) lately and it seems a result similar to mine and then going on to have negative results from further testing is very common. I just don't like not knowing. Whether ours does or doesn't have it, I just want to know, you know? It doesn't help that our doctor's office was very disappointing to deal with throughout the entire process so far.
