Seriously didn't think it would happen to me, but it did... Last night around 7 I started leakin and thought I peed my pants. I went to the bathroom and had bright red blood... Scary moment. I had a doctors appointment in the morning so I was hoping to not go to l&d. Bleeding stopped and I wasn't having contractions. It happened two more times last night until I fell asleep. Woke up fine and called the doctor and they said to just come to my apt. I did and sure enough the doctor checked the fluid and my water broke at 33.5 days... This is baby #4. No rhyme or reason just our luck. They don't want to risk infection and I'm a vbac so if I don't go into labor in the next two days I'll have a c section. My doctor is very vbac friendly and if everything is safe will help me to have a vbac... I'm a ticking time bomb at this point... Any nicu mom's with advice? They said they keep them until around due date usually. Sometimes earlier, so maybe best case scenario is two weeks to 36 weeks of he cooks a couple more days... We've had amazing support from friends since we have 0 family nearby and my mother is disabled. I have 3 older kids at home who need taking care of and a husband who has crazy work hours who has tomorrow off for sure but no idea after that... He does get some paternity leave but it won't be enough with nicu... Any advice. Any prayers would be appreciated. I was due June 10th so a little sad I won't be a June mama, but grateful for modern medicine to help my little boy. It's been fun reading all about our journeys the last 7 months and thanks for the already support. Just trying to stay calm in my lonely hospital room. If you got through my novel you are awesome. I will try to keep posing updates when I can.
Oh no! No experience with anything NICU (I'm a ftm) but I am wishing you the best and hopeful that you get the vbac that you want, but either way stay safe and rest up, mama!
This is insane! Glad you're doing well and I'm super excited to hear updates as they happen. Even though your LO won't be a June baby, please still post your birth announcement on our sticky post! I hope you also share your birth story when you have the time. I hope you're resting up, I can't imagine a life with a family of six! Wowee!
Praying for you and your little one! I'm a FTM with no NICU experience although I've heard repeatedly that the nurses there are often the best in the hospital, very caring and eager to teach people.
Take care of yourself, and don't let your mind play any games with you while you are trying to absorb this game changer. Don't doubt yourself! You and your baby are health and whole, you both are strong and you can do this!
You are in a good place at 33 weeks 5 days. I'm a STM but I just recently became a NICU mom. I had an emergency c-section at 32 weeks and 6 days. It's really difficult but you'll get through it. The journey is quite an emotional roller coaster but you can trust that your LO is in good hands at the NICU.
So far my experience with them has been really good. Even though I really want to have my baby close to me, it's reassuring to know he's being taken care of. I try not to stress myself out thinking about how soon he can come home. I just take it day by day and celebrate his mini milestones.
I'll be thinking of you! Sending thoughts and prayers your way.
I worked in a high level NICU for 5 years. It is an amazing place with some of the most protective and caring staff. Most NICU staff treat each baby as if it were their own and are willing to contact the doctors at a moment's notice if they feel it is needed. With that, some parent's feel as if they don't know what to do because the RN is taking care of everything. Just ask, ask if you can change the diaper, ask to help with the bath, ask to hold if they have't offered, and most importantly ask if you don't know what the plan is or what a sticker/machine/tubing etc. is. Don't feel bad if you have to ask multiple days in a row either, it is hard to remember everything, and there is so much to take in on a NICU.
If you want to breastfeed ask for the lactation specialist, you can request to talk with one now if you are just hanging out waiting for your little one to come. You can ask to speak with the social worker about accommodations near by once you get discharged. You can ask if your hospital has a Child Life Specialist, they provide developmentally appropriate interactions with the infants but also work with the siblings and parents to address any concerns they might have with how the sibling is handling the NICU admission. They can explain to the siblings what is going on with the baby on their developmental level and help with visiting the baby, especially the first visit.
If you have any specific questions feel free to shoot them my way. Good luck and I hope it is a quick NICU stay if at all.
My first son was born at 32 weeks and 5 days. He stayed in the NICU for 15 days before we got the call it was time for him to come home. I loved the NICU staff. They were very informative everytime I went in, very accommodating. I'd stay the whole day when I could. Even though it was difficult leaving each time, it was nice knowing he was well cared for.
laying here in recovery after a c section at 34 weeks after a similar experience.
Came in Saturday at 33 weeks 6 days and got the shot to stimulate the lungs.
Met my son Alex last night via c section because he was breech and my fluid levels were about 0. He came out screaming and was breathing on his own when we saw him in nicu about 2 hours later.
They said no matter what he's not going home until 35 weeks, and then he had to pass tests regarding breathing and eating.
@CillyMama, @ashleyahuff@okashimochi@laceymarie3 and all you wonderful June mamas! Emilywooddesign, and CaliRNmama and Devyn and all you other regulars and the ones I can't remember and just all of you, thank you!!!! Thanks for te thoughts, prayers, good vibes!!! Thank you for advice. I will definitely get lactation in here tomorrow to prep me. I've breast fed 3 times before but have never been great at pumping. The night has gone well. My husband is home with big kids and will come back in the morning. We've had amazing friend support and dinners for all week lined up! I'm in second dose of IV antibiotics and had one oral dose. One steroid shot with another in te morning to boost lungs. Peeing a ton from the IV. I didn't eat food yesterday because I was so nervous... In hindsight I should have... I've only had broth and jello and water and juice. I graduate to real food once the high risk doc comes in the morning. Hallelujah! Had IV zofran which really helped nausea from not eating it was wonderful!!! Staff has been amazing and helpful And kind. High risk comes around 6:30 so not much longer. Hospital is quiet except for my IV pump. My doctor is super vbac friendly but I also really Trust her judgement if a csection is necessary and she is very lets play by ear and worry when we need to worry. Baby is head down!!! Yay! My leak has slowed down a ton since being in bed rest which has given Connor another day at least. Latest he can come is Friday though because of risk of infection. I am 33.6 this morning and 34 is our milestone. I will try to update more wen I can especially when he arrives. Thank you so much again for all the thoughts, prayers, messages and love!!! Typing in phone in hospital sorry for typos. hugs to you all!!!
