Protein shakes-yes or no?

im 16wks on Monday and haven't necessarily had bad morning sickness or food aversion but a bit of nausea here and there. I found that protein shakes here and there are very helpful at filling me up and giving me (what I think) are a good amount of the nutrients the baby needs. I usually make shakeology.
The problem is that most other foods just don't sound that appetizing and so I'm not sure whether or not eating those shakes are the reason why I haven't gained any weight this pregnancy. I only eat them once a day and I do eat 3/4 small meals throughout the rest of my day although it's difficult.
Is anyone else struggling with this?

Re: Protein shakes-yes or no?

  • Protein shakes are okay, but you have to watch the ingredients in them, and also the sugar amounts, and you should be still eating small meals, try fruits and veggies or something small !
  • Loading the player...
  • I would take a good look at the long list of unpronounceable ingredients on some of those. It might be better find a good simple recipe to make your own protein shake in a blender. My husband and I normally add protein powder to our smoothies at home but after checking all the ingredients didn't feel comfortable giving all that to baby when I don't even understand what half of it is.
  • I use isopure protein powder before being pregnant and have continued to use it for an occasional shake while pregnant because I haven't been eating a lot of meat.  As long as you find one with low carbs and sugar and not a lot of other ingredients it should be fine.  It does have vitamins in it as well.
  • Also be sure to watch for any thermogenic ingredients. A lot of powders these days are adopting fat burning complexes... Which I would assume are dangerous for baby. My general rule in choosing a powder is making sure that I can pronounce all of the ingredients. Meaning- they are natural. If not- don't risk it
  • If you find that any of the ingredients in your shakes aren't safe choices during this time, try amping up shakes and smoothies with more natural protein sources. I love using hemp seeds and chia seeds in my smoothies. Plus if I put banana, I can put huge amounts of spinach and other leafy greens without tasting them! :)
  • I've been drinking Organic Valley Fuel as it's been the only thing to calm my nausea lately. I havnt really had meat much this whole pregnancy and have lost a lot of weight due to morning sickness. I think the baby is protein starved... Organic Valley has a short list of safe ingredients. Give it a go!
  • My OB told me if I'm using shakeology, then to cut out my prenatal vitamin. Days I don't drink a shake, I take the viramin.

  • I found Tera's Whey, these are the only ingredients. Organic dairy whey protein concentrate, Organic cocoa (processed with alkali), Organic stevia leaf extract, Organic soy lecithin. I made peanut butter cookies with it, delish!!!

  • My dr said shakeology had too much vitamin a in it and taking
That with prenatal would overload system with vitamin A
  • My morning sickness just isn't going away!
I've lost 15lbs since being pregnant and it's extremely hard to find foods I can keep down.  Usually the things I can eat aren't the healthiest either.  I started out trying to make my own shakes but it didn't end well.  I've been drinking an Ensure Nutrition Shake for breakfast and so far I am happy with my decision. I know that I'm giving my baby protein and other nutrients that it wasn't always getting before so I feel like I'm doing the best I can with the circumstances I've been given.   Once my body is able to handle whole, natural foods again I'll drop the Shake and move on.

  • The Tera's Whey isn't packed full of vitamins, 20 g protein and only 5 carbs. I am GD so it's perfect for me.
