Okay this is my first pregnancy so I'm not sure if this happens all the time or what. At my first appointment we originally thought I was about nine weeks along. Then we had an ultrasound a few days later and that showed I was only about six weeks. Now a week later my doctors office has called and they want to do a second ultrasound to verify that the six weeks is correct. Is that a pretty normal thing to not??
Thank you!
Re: Is this typical?
Most OBs estimate how far along you are based only on the first day of your last period assuming you ovulated on CD14. So if you ovulated later than CD14 their dating may be off. If you only ovulated later by a few days it shouldn't be a big deal but if you ovulated a couple weeks later then that would be why you're a couple weeks past their estimate.
Or another option (but please don't worry about this until confirmed by the 2nd u/s) is a missed miscarriage (MMC). This is where the baby stops developing but your body still acts as if everything is ok and thinks it's pregnant. I had a MMC. I went in for my 10w u/s and the baby was only 5w. That is a much bigger difference than being 6w at the expected 9w mark and I was confident in my dates so don't worry about it yet. It's most likely ok and just a dating discrepancy.
Good luck to you, FX!!
