It was confirmed today that I am having a miscarriage. I've had two previously; however, this time I am having a D&C. I'm wondering, what should I expect? What happens? How soon after can I ttc again? I know these are all questions I can ask my doctor or the nurse line, but there's something about hearing it from those who have lived it that is helpful and healing. Any insights or comments would be appreciated.
Hi there, I am sorry for your loss. I had a d&c Tuesday of last week. I was "on call" so I had to go to the hospital at 9 am and basically wait until the doctor had time to do the procedure. They put in an iv and they had me in for surgery at around 3. My doctor did the surgey which was nice. They put me to sleep thankfully and I was in recovery before 4. They gave me a T3 (I'm not big on pain meds) and I took some extra strength Tylenol when I got home. I was home in bed by 530.
The pain was manageable, I just took some Tylenol. My heating pad has been a great help. I took a day to rest afterwards and was back to work the next day.
I am glad that I had the opportunity to have the d&c done. It is not somehing anyone wants to have happen but it has helped us begin to heal.
Our doctor said that he needs to see me again 4 weeks after the surgey and that we can begun trying after a month. However, it is different for everyone. Take care of yourself and good luck. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to ask.
I am so sorry for both of your losses @awood04 really explained the process nicely. I had a d&c this past Friday, and it went well. I did have some vomiting prior to the surgery only because they gave me doxycycline on an empty stomach and I was still having morning sickness. After the surgery I had heavy cramping, and needed the pain meds, but only for the first two days. The heating pad has been my saving grace. It's kind of become a comfort of sorts. My bleeding is just a light pink when I wipe, haven't even needed a pad. This is different from the d&c I had 9 years ago. With that one I had very heavy bleeding and clotting for about a week. Hope what I'm saying is helpful.
As far as getting a period I think it varies but 4-6 weeks is the norm. I have suffered 5 miscarriages total, however inbetween the first two mc, I was fortunate enough to have 4 children. I'm 38 this year, so I do not plan to wait more than a month or two before TTC again. My SO and I are looking into some genetic counseling, as we have suffered 3 early losses in the past 3 years. Please be gentle with yourself and rest. Xo
I had a D&C almost 3 weeks ago now. I bled the first day like a period, then nothing for 3 days, then started bleeding again and then spotted til 2 weeks after the D&C. They gave me Toradol IV for the cramping at the hospital and then when I came home I just took ibuprofen for a few days and didn't need anything else. I'm glad I had the D&C, it was quick and I was in and out of the hospital in 4.5 hours. They put me to sleep for the whole thing so that was good too. My doctor told me to wait 2 cycles before TTC again, but go with whatever your doctor recommends for you. Get plenty of rest and know that you are not alone. Sending hugs your way.
I had a D&E on Friday. I had to be there at 5:30am, the surgery was at 7:30am and I woke up at 8:15am. (I had general anesthesia.) I felt fine the first day. That night my throat started getting sore from being intubated. I woke up during the night with a really sore throat, and a sore neck, shoulders and back. I described it as feeling like I had been bounced around in the dryer. Very little cramps and hardly any bleeding at first. Sunday morning the cramps started to get uncomfortable, then around 6pm I started bleeding bright red blood and have been ever since. I called the doctor's office Monday morning and am still waiting for a call back from the nurse. I looked it up online, though, and I don't think it's a problem. Everyone seems to have a different experience regarding the bleeding. There doesn't seem to be a "typical" way for that to go. I read that as long as I'm not soaking a pad an hour (and I'm not even close) that it's okay.
I think a lot of the D&C/D&E posts that I read before the surgery were probably written the day of the surgery, which would provide incomplete information. I had the impression it would be all done that day with no bleeding afterward. I suppose the fact that they would be removing everything gave me that impression as well. Anyway, this is all tolerable -- it's just a bit of a disappointment because I thought I would be good as new the next day. (Physically, anyway.) My doctor had even said I would be tired the day of the surgery but fine the next day. He called Friday afternoon to check on me and I told him I felt great -- no cramps and no bleeding since I left the hospital. So he may not hear from people after additional symptoms appear.
If you have cramps, try a heating pad. Someone else mentioned it and I tried it this morning and it helped so much.
As for your last question, my dr told me to wait until after one normal period to TTC.
Good luck, and I'm so sorry this is your third time going through this.

I had my D&C a week and a half ago. The day before I needed to have my pre-op appointment which I thought would be fairly quick, but it wound up taking almost 2 hours, but a lot of it was waiting around. They took 3 vials of blood from me and made sure I wasn't allergic to anything pretty standard. I'll warn you now that the question are you pregnant was on the questionnaire and that sent me into hysterical crying because I knew the answer was no. I also had to fill out a Fetal Death Worksheet required by New York State.
The next day I arrived at 6:30am they brought me in right away and got my IV going which was really uncomfortable, my cousin thought maybe it was hitting a nerve, because it hurt. My surgery started at 7:30, and was only 30 minutes. Then they took me into recovery, my temperature must have dropped during the surgery because I was shivering in recovery but they got me more warm blankets and I was fine after that. I was home by 1 and slept on and off the rest of the day. I had some bleeding that day, but not enough to soak threw a pad, but I still changed the pad everytime I went to the bathroom because I was scared of infection. I just felt sore that day like raw.
The next day I had a few cramps, but they were easily tamed by a heating pad and a Tylenol pill. My bleeding was very minor started off bright red at the beginning, then just blood when I wiped, then it turned brown, and now I don't have any bleeding at all and go for my post-op tomorrow where hopefully I get lifted from pelvic rest, but either way they told me I could start having sex again 2 weeks after the D&C which is this Friday for me.
They also said wait one normal period before I resume TTC.
I hope this helps, so sorry for your loss :-( I still wish none of us were here, but am glad we have each other.

@bntfroggie, I've had 3 surgeries and shivered after every one. I just googled it and apparently "Postanesthetic shivering is one of the leading causes of discomfort in patients recovering from general anesthesia."
Also, I had to give blood and urine samples two days before the surgery and the paperwork said, "Diagnosis: fetal demise." They sure try to make you cry in the waiting room, don't they?
