Kelly?

I started a joke with my mom that I was going to name my son after her. Her name is Kelly. Well, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. Is it weird to name a boy Kelly if it's his grandmother's name? Should I consider Kellan instead?

Re: Kelly?

  • I've known a couple of guys called Kelly. I really like it.

  • I love Kelly on a boy!!

  • I love Kelly for a boy. If you have hesitation, you could always go MN. I have a friend named James Kelly LN and I think it's a nice, strong name.
  • I love it! I think it would be a great name choice.

  • Kelly is a great name for a boy!
  • I like it on a boy, but I do not know if id want my son and mom to have same name. (regardless of name) Id use it in middle spot.
  • I love Kelly for a boy. I would never use it for a girl.
  • I have a nephew named Kelly. It is a masculine name, so if you love it, go for it.
  • I love Kelly on a boy. I think that trend for Kelly on a girl is over! (Time to reclaim the name) Kellen is nice too, but Kelly is refreshing and new again.
  • I am going to be the lone dissentor here- I would not name a boy Kelly.  I like it for a MN though.

I have to agree. As much as I can't stand people giving boy names to their girls, I was brought up in the 80/90s when Kelly was HUGE on girls, at least in my area. I would worry about him being made fun of or him having resentment, especially if his grandmother has the same name.
  • I love the idea! Kelly is such a great name for a boy. I do agree with other posters though that since it is your mother's name, it would probably be best as his middle name.
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • Kelly on a boy is NMS but I don't hate it. However, I absolutely would not name my son after his grandmother. Maybe as a MN but that's as close as I'd get.
  • I think Kelly is fine for a boy.
  • I wouldn't do it! I know it's traditionally a boy's name, but like Ashley, Robin, or Aubrey I just wouldn't. I think sharing a name with your grandmother makes it weirder. I think Kellan is a nice alternative.
  • Thanks everyone! After this thread I have to admit I'm still pretty torn. Not sure if it makes a difference, but I am unmarried, and so if I named him Kelly he and his grandmother would not only have the same first name, but last name too.
  • Okay, yeah, that's weird. I think Kellan works and I really like it.

    Hmm.

On one hand, if you had a daughter and named her Kelly after your Mom, nobody would bat an eyelash, so why should anyone care if a boy shares the same name, it is afterall, a "thing" to name a son after a father or grandfather. On the other, I can see how that could cause confusion in everyday life.

Do you live nearby your Mom? Are you in the same town, and is it a small town or more of a city?
  • @wassuphoes I do live near my mom. We don't live in the same town, but I live in the small town I grew up in, where everyone knows her.

    Ah.

So. Are people dicks there? Cause, I love Kelly for a boy, and think naming your son after his grandma is sweet, but if you think people are going to be dicks about it, then I'd use it in the middle name spot.
  • @wassuphoes It's a rural town, but I don't really think people would be dicks about it. I mean to a certain extent I don't really care, because it's not like his peers will know her. I don't know yet, there's a lot to consider. He already has a middle name that isn't subject to change. My mom really likes Killian so I'm considering just using the name that was her first choice as my tribute. Thanks for your help!!

100% no then.  That's really weird to me.

It's not my favorite name on a boy, but it could be worse! I like the idea.

That's might get really confusing when they are together. Ex is Kelly going with Kelly to the store? Or when he's older... Can you tell Kelly to pick up something from the store? Which one? etc. You would probably end up with a nickname because this.

This. I would give him his own name and use it in the MN spot.

  • Agreed with PPs that Kelly is a traditionally masculine name, I've known male Kellys, it's a nice name and how nice to name after your mom. My first association with the name in my mind is Kelly Green the color which is a pretty gender irrelevant association and a beautiful vibrant color. Good luck!
  • I also think Kellan is really nice and I've heard the name Keller as well.

Kelly is one of the few names I consider truly unisex. Go for it.
