Ultrasound and intros!

This is my first pregnancy. I have no idea what to expect! We have been married almost 2 years. I just got off BC the last week in Feb and we got pregnant immediately. I am now 5 w and 1 day along! I have definitely been cramping on and off. I was so glad to read that many of us have that same issue! I have been so freaked out by it. I am so nervous about something going wrong. The cramping sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night. So my OB's office said I will not get an ultra sound at my first appt! And that I probably won't come back in until 11 or 12 weeks along for one! I don't want to wait that long. :(

Re: Ultrasound and intros!

  • I called to set up my first appointment today. She said not to expect an ultrasound until 20 weeks! Maybe it's because I am going to a midwifery practice? I am considering calling the OB practice to see what they do. I would really like to see some evidence of our lil peanut before 20 weeks!!! :)

    Congratulations!!!

  • Oh girl! I would too! I bet that's why. I could not wait that long. My momma senses are already there and I need to know baby is okay.
  • Mine says no first appointment until between 10-13 weeks, which I found frustrating. Sounds like a lot of people are getting earlier appointments for blood tests and things. But sometimes I can see it as a good thing, too. I am such a worrier, I think if I had early sonograms it might just bring up more worry and concern. I am trying to listen to my body, and right now I think everything is fine. Pretty scary for people who have no idea what they are doing....like me.
  • It's so comforting to be able to have support! At least we all know we aren't in this alone. :) The crazy thing is the first trimester isn't far from over by 10 wks!
  • I'm not going in for my first appt until 10 weeks and I know the time will drag by! I just want to see that there is a baby in there and that everything is going well.

  • This will be my third baby. I have an appt with a nurse and lab work at 7 weeks and see the doc at 10 weeks. I've never had an early ultrasound-only the one at 20 weeks. Most that get them early are considered high risk (I believe-someone correct me if I'm wrong). It's understandably disappointing not to have more but I'd rather have a normal pregnancy than to require more.
  • With my first, the one and only ultrasound we had was at 20 weeks. I was seeing a midwife and was very low risk. It was hard, but like pp said, that meant we were doing fine :)

Many hospitals give a dating, 13 week IPS ultrasound, and an 18-20 week anatomy scan... A BPP scan in third trimester if you are overdue or have pain/bleeding. A dating ultrasound is usually given before the second trimester when the mum is unsure of her dates, or some one who is high risk or has had previous miscarriages!
Although this isn't the honest way, many of my friends have told me that if you tell the doctor that you are unsure of your dates (LMP) they will give you an early ultrasound to see how far along you are ...
I agree with LaceyH, I'm trying to just listen to my body and it seems to be telling me that everything is fine so I can wait. But just thought I would let the worriers know haha
  • Most people get early appointments because of complications with past pregnancies.  That is the case for me.  My first two pregnancies, I didn't get seen until 9 weeks along.  It also depends on your doctor, but most practices do one ultrasound at 20 weeks and that is it.  Unless there are other reasons for more, that might be it.

Blood draws are the same way.  I only get them because of a history of ectopic pregnancies.  Again, with my first two, I didn't even really know what HCG Beta's were?!?

If you aren't getting seen yet, assume all is well and try to relax.

  • I had a great first pregnancy so my Dr gave me options as to what I wanted to do. I am 6w2d. I had my 'confirmation' appointment yesterday with my OB. Full blood work this morning and I have an ultrasound for dating and viability at 8 weeks. He recommends one at 12-13 weeks for testing purposes but offered me the 8 week option because he knows that's a long time for moms to wait.
  • I have an initial appointment for consultation/labs/discussion of optional prenatal testing at 6 weeks, then a dating ultrasound at 8/9 weeks. We choose to do the nuchal translucency test at 12/13 weeks which includes blood and ultrasound, & then the anatomy scan around 20 weeks. Been the same for all three pregnancies.

  • Because my LMP was on February 1st, the receptionist at my ObGyn scheduled me to come in today, April 10th because she figured I was at 9 weeks...despite the fact my periods are irregular and I tested negative as late at April 17th! Anyway, I went to the doc and told her everything I told the receptionist, and she said "honey, you're probably no more than 6 weeks!...if we do an ultrasound we may not be able to see anything."

I still wanted to give it a try, she was game, and sure enough there was a little 6 week old peanut with heartbeat and all.
